white mountains hiking near jackson and then route to bar harbor

we are planning our first fall foliage trip. we land at portland and plan to drive to the white mountains.

is jackson a good base for hiking? we want easy/moderate hikes with not too steep inclines.

how long is the drive from jackson to bar harbor? i have read that it takes from 4-6 hours.
what is the faster route w/fewer curves? is it going via portland?

we did not see any mountain areas closer to bar harbor.
