which web site to buy Broadway tickets?
I am looking for tickets online and many reseller websites come up. I know Broadway box is mentioned a lot here, and Stub Hub was recommended to me, but how can I know if others are legit? How can I be sure the tickets are authentic? Are there any sites to be wary of?

If you go to the official websites of the actual shows and try to purchase, you will follow links to the show's official ticket seller, usually Telecharage or Ticketmaster.
Broadwaybox and Theatermania do not sell tickets. They provide a listing of current discount codes to use at the official ticket sellers or the theater box office.
Stub Hub is a well-respected reseller. I would be suspicious of most others.

If you are looking for discount tickets, then go to broadwaybox.com or playbill.com.
If it's full-price tickets you are looking for, then your safest bet is, as ellenm wrote, to start with Telecharge or Ticketmaster.

Telecharge and Ticketmaster are really the ONLY legit outlets for Broadway shows. The above mentioned sites (Broadway Box, Playbill, etc) offer discount codes for certain shows, but the tickets come from Telecharge or Ticketmaster.

As four your last comment, TC, not always. You can also print out a copy of the discount offer and redeem it at the box office for that particular show, thus avoiding the $7 or so Telecharge or Ticketmaster surcharge per ticket.

That's assuming that they have seats available on the day that you decide to go. OK if you're in NY long-term - but if you only have a couple of days much better to choose in advance so 1) your party can sit together and 2) you have the best coice of discounted seats.

I'm not disagreeing with that last posting. I'm just pointing out that you don't always have to go through Ticketmaster or Telecharge to take advantage of discount offers.
Obviously, it depends on how well or poorly the discounted show is doing in general! Further, it often makes a difference whether it's a weekday or weekend performance as to ticket availability.
In terms of general advice, I'd say that if you have your heart set on a particular show that's available at discount, then I'd get the tickets in advance. However, if your options are very open and you'd be happy with any one of several discounted shows (especially for a weekend performance), then I'd take my chances and wait until I got here and then go right to the box office(s)to save the service charges.
There is also one other factor to consider, namely, when will you be coming? If it's a peak season (like the end-of-the-year holidays), then I'd get the tickets ASAP.

Once again, you are correct, Howard. I was addressing my comment to the OP question, regarding the authenticity of on-line ticket purchases. The original post didn't ask how to use discount coupons. I assumed that she would feel comfortable that her tix are legit if purchased at the show's box office so I didn't address that issue.

Thanks all. I was looking for tickets to War Horse and Book of Mormon, so I realized there was no chance of discounts at all. But searching for online tickets brought up so many different sites that I didn't know which ones I could trust. Following the advice here I managed to get a reasonably priced ticket direct from Telecharge for War Horse, and an unreasonably priced ticket from Stub Hub for Book of Mormon. As I am only in New York for a few days at the end of October, I am very happy (and will be happier when I delete the price of Book of Mormon from my memory!)
