Which part of Maui to stay?
We're spending around 10 days in Hawaii and splitting our time between Maui and Kauai. I was thinking about staying in a resort on Kauai and then a condo on Maui. We'll probably be on Maui for 5-6 days and want to stay at 1 place instead of moving every couple of days. I've read that Hana on the East side is really beautiful but that there are great condos on the West side. We'd like to be able to walk to restaurants and shops or have a quick car ride.
Should we stay on the East, West or South side? Thanks for any advice!

If you want to walk to shops, etc. I would stay in the Lahaina-Kannapali area. The Hana area is beautiful, but can also be a little remote.
If you have a car, and don't mind driving a few minutes to shopping, etc. then I'd definatly recommend the Kapalua area.

Tjhere are almost no restaurants or shops in Hana. There is nothing in Hana except solitude, tranquility, and beautiful surroundings. Hana is not for everyone. As a matter of fact it is not for most people or there would be more places to stay in Hana. Very few people stay there.

I thought Lahaina was a great little town to visit. We stayed at Lahaina Shores a condo/hotel at the south end of Front Street. Walk to shops and restaurants or a quick car ride for even more choices.

Keep in mind also that the surf can be dangerous on the east side. West side is safer if you're wanting to snorkel or take a surf lesson.
We stayed in a condo called "Hale Kai" on the west side and loved it. www.halekai.com
We visited Hana and spent one night - it was lovely.

I don't know if there are condos in WAILEA...but we always stay here. It is so beautiful and has some of the best restaurants here. Wherever you stay in Maui is sure to be beautiful....Have a great time!

My two cents worth:
How about a resort on Maui and a condo on Kaua`i? I was just thinking that there are more resort choices on Maui than on Kaua`i, and there are some lovely condo choices in gorgeous areas on Kaua`i. Something to think about...or not.
With regards to your original plan: You did not specify price, but some of the nicest condos on Maui would be Makena Surf (south of Wailea), Polo Beach (Wailea) and Kaanapali Ali`i (Kaanapali). One of my favorite areas is Napili. There are several "moderately" priced older condo complexes there.
