Which Keys hotel?

Looking for 4 night getaway in June, and would like to find a hotel with a beach on the grounds, or nearby.
Right now, looking at 2 that have no beach, but am interested in: Best Western Key Ambassador, or Heron House Court.
Heron House Court says "adults only."
Is that code for "gay?"
That does not scare away my wife and I, BUT I would like to know if we will be ostracized - bigotry cuts both ways.

Adults only means don't bring kids.

The Best Western Key Ambassador is in a very inconvenient location by the airport. And even though it's across the street from water, it's not a swimmable area.

You definitely want to stay in Old Town, though. The Casa Marina and Reach both have beaches and are on the Atlantic. The Pier House is on the other side of the island and it has a nice small beach, too. My personal preference is the Gulf rather than the Atlantic simply because it's closer to restaurants and other tourist activities and water sports.

If I were you, I'd opt for the Heron House rather than the Heron House Court because the location is better.

I'll just add (in case you're not familiar with keys beaches) that the keys are coral and all beaches are small and man-made.

The Casa Marina or The Reach are the only ones with acutal beaches.

The Hyatt used to advertise beach, maybe they still do but it is literally only about 10x10 if that.

Doesn't it rain a lot in June?

There is really no beach in Key West to write home about. If the beach is your primary goal, there are better places in Florida at that time of year.

The Southernmost on the Beach also has a beach, and guests at the adjacent Southernmost Hotel also have beach privileges.

And as another poster said, adults-only means adults-only. If a hotel is gay-owned or gay-friendly, it advertises it proudly. Key West just isn't the kind of place where anyone feels like they need to euphemize a lifestyle.

Two other places on the Atlantic (also in the Southernmost Hotel group) are Dewey and La Mer House.

We enjoyed the Island City House this past year.

If you opt for the Heron House properies, as suggested the Court is further away from the action and restaurants. The Heron House is closer in.

The Keys are still a unique experience (thank God) and the reality doesn't always fit in with many folks' fantasy Florida beach vacation.

Island City House gets rave reviews, but if you're looking for a more adult experience (meaning no children) you might be slightly disappointed, as ICH is one of the few inns in Key West that welcomes children.
