Hi my husband and I are thinking about taking a trip to Hawaii and wondered wheres the best place to stay? Ive looked at hotels around Diamond Head but too many to decide on. We want to be right on the beach with a ocean or Diamond Head view with a nice balcony and free breakfast and walking distance to shopping and restaurants. What do you recommend and do you have any good links to give me on hotels, attractions, etc. Planning on going in Aug. or Sept. Thank you.

Happy Hunting,
This website will show you the location of hotels on Waikiki--whether they are ocean front or not.

Thanks for the info. This is help alot.
There are only a few hotels that are right *on* the beach in Waikiki (I think it's 8 or 9 of them). Many other will have ocean and DiamondHead views but are not directly ON the sand. That narrows down your search alot, if that if a requirement. I would not base your hotel choice on free breakfast. Only a couple hotels offer that (Embassy Suites for one) but there are lots of places all around to get reasonably priced breakfasts.
Your title asks "which island", but it sound like you've already decided on Oahu?
Before my first Hawaii trip I checked out a pile of guidebooks from the library to read and look at the photos to understand better the different islands and what they each have to offer.
It is helpful to provide more information to get the best advice:
1. How many nights do you havem for this trip?
2. Do you want to stay on the island of Oahu, or do you want to visit other islands?
3. How active do you want to be? or not be?
4. What sort of accomodation budget do you have?
Reading some guidebooks would really help provide lots of information. Fodors makes one. There are many others. Hawaii for Dummies is a very useful resource, despite the humorous name.
3.
Placename,
Hi we are planning on 7-8 nights. I think we would stay on one island unless we can get to other islands pretty cheap. We love to shop go to shows etc.Would like a hotel around $ 250.00 a night or less if possible.
Hmmmm, shopping and shows on the one hand, and Hawaii, on the other hand, are pretty much mutually exclusive. In Waikiki, you can shop to your heart's content, but elsewhere, not so much, other than beach and souvenir type shops. Shows? Except maybe for a hula performance, or a luau, not sure what would qualify.
sf7307 there are shows in Honolulu... dinner theater, dinner cruises, commedy, Don Ho (without Don of course http://www.donho.com/ ), Society of Seven, Cirque Hawaii, etc.
The only other place that I think fits "shows and shopping" requirement is maybe Lahaina on Maui.
The shops at Waikoloa on the Big Island north of Kona offer several kinds of Hawaiian shows, mostly free. The shopping part depends on what you are looking for. If you want Hawaiian clothing, souvenirs, art pieces, etc., those shops are good.
We recently stayed 6 nights at Honua Kai in Lahaina, Maui. We loved Maui! The Feast at Lele luau was excellent and we were close to Kapalua and Napili, two gorgeous beaches in Maui. ***kim***
Last summer went to Oahu and Maui, this year we are going back to Kauai .
We stay at the Hyatt Resorts to get the free breakfast buffets, and one night free after every 5. Been going to one of the Hawaiian Islands every summer, for 45 years.
If you want a view of Diamond Head, then the very best hotel in Oahu, would be the Halekulani Hotel. The others on the beach would be the Royal Hawaiian, Sheraton, Outriggers and Moana Surfrider. Depending on which tower, and how high up you book a room, you will have the views you ask for.
Right now the Hyatt Waikiki has great prices, due to finishing up some remodeling of the facility. We were on the 38th floor with deluxe ocean front and had a nice view of Diamond Head in the Diamond Head tower. Right our your door are $12 Outrigger rides and $35 catamaran rides that go to Diamond Head and back. The Hyatt lends beach chairs and towels to take over to the beach, or around the island. Every Friday is a free Hula Show at the Hyatt.
Shopping and shows are on each side of the hotel. The International Market Place is only a block away.
