Which Island?

My significant other & I have never been to Hawaii, and we're thinking of going there the week of Thanksgiving. As first-timers, any suggestions as to which island we should visit? We'll be there about 9 days. Thank you! -Cheryl

Maui is very beautiful and relaxing. Go there if you want to be spoiled. The Big Island is for the more adventerous. Go there if you want to rent a 4X4 and have some fun. Enjoy your trip!

Actually, in nine days you could probably comfortably visit two islands. I would choose two contrasting ones. Maui is a great choice for nice beaches, relaxing, the Hana Hwy and sunrise at Haleakala. I love the Big Island for the diversity of the climate and its very active volcano. Why not try five days on Maui, one night on the Hilo side and three on the Kohala coast of the Big Island. No, you don't need a 4X4. The roads that aren't off limits to rental vehicles are fine.

Well...I used to be a huge Maui fan until this summer when we spent two weeks in Kauai. I do love Maui and I plan to return, but not until I spend many more days exploring Kauai. Kauai is simply one of the most relaxing and beautiful places I have been. There is plenty of active pursuits to be had, but the atmosphere is so laid back you just melt into a mellow groove that is scary. The island is small, which is a good thing as getting around is not that big a deal. It also has a small town sensibility about it that is very pleasing. I WOULD NOT split up your nine days between two islands. Pick one island and dig in. I have been to all the islands and they all offer something different. Whatever you do, do lots of reading and researching. Pick up The Ultimate Kauai Guide and Maui Revealed books for sure. These are invaluable resources that put the other books to shame. Enjoy your time on whatever island you choose.

I vote for 5 days on Maui and 4 days on either Kauai or the Big Island. If you want to take a chance to see an active, lava producing volcano go to the Big Island. If you prefer hiking in pristine areas, kayaking, and relatively secluded beaches choose Kauai. Either way you can't go wrong in paradise!

For first timers it should be Maui. All islands are different but Maui is sorta like all the islands rolled into one. Much of what bquarre posted is right on the mark. 9 days gives you enough time to really explore one island fairly well but not enough to lose a day packing/unpacking and screwing with 3 airports (all major interisland flights go through Honolulu)

Cheryl,
Geechee is 100% correct about Maui being all rolled into one. I've been going to Hawaii for about 10 years now over Thanksgiving and if I had to pick just 2 islands for a first timer its Maui and Kauai
