My husband and I made the unfortunate mistake of getting married March 24 (it was the date that was unfortunate, not the marrying). That is right smack dab in the middle of Spring Break. I would love to plan a weekend getaway for us for next year but want to avoid the Spring Break crowds as much as possible. Still, as a lifelong Florida resident there are so many places in my state that I haven't seen and an anniversary weekend is such a good excuse to get away for a long weekend, plus the weather at the end of March is usually perfect.
I'm thinking about either Sanibel or Apalachicola - would either or both of those be too crowded at the end of March? We like quiet nature, not beer pong contests.
BTW, this will be our 23rd anniversary, so obviously the marrying was not a mistake. We used to go on a little weekend trip every year but got out of the habit at some point and started doing an annual longer trip to someplace far away. I'd like to get back into visiting Florida and March is such a good time for that (we don't like the heat and bugs of the summer).
Thanks for any advice.
Which is better for avoiding Spring Break crowds - Sanibel or Apalachicola?

I would guess that Sanibel would have fewer young ones than most other florida beach areas. It will have plenty of people who have lived a while though.
Sanibel gets my vote every time but there is not much beach in Apalachicola, if you go to St George Island that would probably be a different story, most of Apalachicola that I saw was small town, restaurants, antique stores, not what the spring breakers would like.
I don't think either of them would have the wild and crazy spring breakers but Apalach DEFINITELY won't. It's a lovely little town and the closest beaches are St. George Island (the most developed), Indian Pass (virtually nothing there except gorgeous beaches, rental houses and the Turtle Beach Inn) and Cape San Blas (more to choose from but still not spring breaker country). Be sure to eat at the Indian Pass Raw Bar if you want good, inexpensive seafood at great prices.
We were at Sanibel that time of year this year, and while there lots of others around, it was not Spring Break types at all. Very, very peaceful vacation.
At the end of March, you might still have snow birds in Sanibel.
As a longtime Floridian, you are aware that Appalachicola still has cool weather risk at the end of March that Sanibel does not.
In general, the only college kids we ever saw in Naples or Sanibel during Spring Break were visiting grandma.
I also agree that either would be fine. We were on Cape
San Blas the first two weeks of March this year and while there were Spring Breakers, they were few and mild manered. The beach was still not at all crowded and very peaceful. Appalach has no beach but a few good places to eat. If you're interested in recommendations let me know.
