If you are driving on the Taconic there are several parking/scenic view areas in Columbia county. Not worth a detour to get to, but nice views on a clear day. August isn't a good time due to 3H's. Hazy, hot, humid.
If you are on the West side of the Hudson then the area near the Shawangunks near New Paltz offers some nice views as well. There are several spots near on RT-55 near these coordinates 41.736188, -74.191269 (put those #'s into google maps).
If you drove Rt 52 East from Liberty you'd connect with Rt 209 then Rt 55 near Ellenville.
Both of those options will give you nice views of the Hudson Valley.

You could also stop by Minnewaska State park (nominal entry fee/car). It's a very pretty lake, with a nice open field right next to the parking lot, looking down on the lake. Some of the group could take a walk around the lake while those who may be less mobile could hang out with the view & prep the picnic.
Just a bit further is Mohonk Mtn house - beautiful setting on it's own lake - expensive entry fee as it's private grounds. If $ isn't an issue you could go there for lunch or dinner.
A little further down RT 299 (turn off Rt 55 as you go down the hill from the 'Gunks) will take you to the town of New Paltz. Not for the view, but some nice shops and lunch/dinner places.

ssvw27 - <hard to read all caps? huh?>
Yes, I find it hard to read 'all caps'. Others say it is 'rude'. Check this out and tell me what you think:

Also, "If you use regular type and lots of short paragraphs you will get your questions out there in the most easy to read way and get more responses. Good luck!"

We just had a fabulous picnic in the middle of the Hudson river...at the Saugherties lighthouse (West side of the river). There is a big parking lot and you walk 10 minutes on a flat path.boardwalk through trees and flowers and marsh vegetation to the old lighthouse with picnic tables with views both up and down the Hudson. Free!
