Where to stay..Sarasota, Sanibel or Islamorada

Where to stay..Sarasota, Sanibel or Islamorada
Doing my homework for possible trip to Fla in 4/04. Looking for a relaxing beach vacation..traveling with my husband and 14-year-old daughter. Have narrowed it down to Sarasota (Longboat Key area), Sanibel (concerned about Red Tide at that time of yr), or Islamorada. Looking for opinions. Thanks!!

While I love Islamorada, there really isn't any decent beaches there. My vote would be for Longboat Key or Siesta Key. We have stayed at the Turtle Beach Resort. Nice place, very relaxing. Here is the url: http://turtlebeachresort.com/index.htm

I agree on Islamorada being a bit too quiet, especially with a 14 year old.
Don't worry too much about red tide--not a usual occurence, and it is so hit or miss (Longboat can be affected as well as well). You might have it at one end of an island but not the other.
I'd do either Sarasota or Sanibel with a 14 year old, and it'd be a toss up as to which one. Better dining around Sarasota, and perhaps more for your 14 year old, but Sanibel is beautiful too.
buckeyemom, a tourist was hit by lightning day before yesterday at Turtle Beach...heart stopped and all others in her party knocked to the ground as well. This was one of those bolts literally "out of the blue". There had been storms but they had just passed and no clouds nearby at the time. She's in critical condition, not yet responsive! We've had unbelievable weather the past few days. Depending on where in county you are, as of last night's news, between 6 and 12" of rain have fallen since Sunday and it's raining now as well. Heavy duty thunderstorms too, with one stroke hitting so close to our casita that the lightning and thunder were simultaneous, and I heard a very distinct "sizzle" noise at the same time!
The cat now lives under the bed...heads there as soon as she hears the rain start on the skylights, knowing what will follow! Two days of constant rain = cabin fever in this normally sunny climate! We need Scarlett's Ark!

OO, we've also had those torrential thunderstorms in coastal SC every single day! My yard is a mesquito farm and when the sun comes out, I swear what little grass I have grows an inch an hour!
I don't know what was worse, our draught last spring or the sponge my yard has become.

That's terrible OO. We have had a lot of rain in Ohio but thankfully no bad storms. Last week we were up at the Lake and it rained almost every day. The one nice day I took my dd to the top of the Marblehead Lighthouse.
