Where to stay in the Berkshires

Hi. I am going to New Hampshire in a few weeks on business, and my wife and I would like to visit the Berkshires afterward. We can only stay a few days, but we would like to at least get a taste of the area. Can anyone recommend a nice town and moderately priced B&B to stay in? Thank you.

Lenox is the place to stay in my opinion. Please note that on weekends, you must stay2-3 nights at almost every place; Williamstown is also nice if you are interested in art museums. I cannot recommend a specific b and b...they are all less expensive mid-week.

The 3 best towns are Lenox, Stockbridge (quite close to each other) and Williamstown. Williamstown is sort of removed from the rest of the Berkshires, but in truth, nothing is very far from anything else. Lenox and Stockbridge fill up quickly when Tanglewood is in season, which it will be during your visit.

My B&B experience there is nil. I grew up there, and now when we go back, we stay in the Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, which probably wouldn't fall into the moderate category. If you can get to Tanglewood, even for an afternoon when you might take in a rehearsal, it is well worth your while. The grounds are Berkshries gorgeous--vast expanses of lawns, an old home still there from the Victorian era...now part of BSO's practice area, all overlooking tranquil Stockbridge Bowl in the distance. It is simply beautiful, even if you don't enjoy the music.

Another favorite for tranquil Berkshire beauty, Bash Bish Falls on Mt Washington. It's no longer a well kept secret, but beautiful none-the-less as it courses through a 200 ft gorge which terminates in the 60 ft falls. There is a short and well maintained trail to the base of the falls.

My last favorite....Mt. Greylock. You can drive to the top where there are beautiful view of 3 states on a clear day.

We will be up there next weekend! We are staying in Hillsdale NY, right on the border of the Berkshires. Saturday we will spend in Williamstown.
We were there last August and Bash Bish Falls had dried up in the drought and there was a fire warning, so this year I hope to hike up and see them.
I second the Red Lion Inn, it is an all-round good place to be based.
There is plenty to see, Lenox, Stockbridge, Tangelwood,(try to see an afternoon concert-or dance at Jacobs Pillow)http://www.jacobspillow.org/2003/

Great Barrington and Lenox have some great restaurants. We are trying Verdura this time-Italian, and in Lenox, the Zinc Bistro.

If you get to Williamstown, the Clark Museum has Turner paintings on exhibit now..the purpose of my trip

I'm jealous Scarlett! Give a little wave at my old street, Spadina Pkwy, two stop lights north of the Pittsfield Country Club which you'll pass on rte 7 on your way to Williamstown from Lenox.

Bash Bish should have some water this year, the year to end all years, the year of the infamous 4* Scarlett's Ark! It really should be worth the hike. I've never seen it low, but it would certainly have the least water of any time of year during the summer.

Sterling Clark Museum is one of the must sees in Wmstown, and the Wmstown Theater Festival in the summer another, but often sold out well in advance.

Scarlett, if you are approaching Wmstown anytime toward lunch, take a look at "the Store at Five Corners" for gourmet items, either eat in or take out. It's on the right side of rte 7 at the intersection of 43 heading into town. Another found place but I hope it retains a fraction of what it had--that is a Berkshires tradition.

Hello, Olive, honey
Last summer we ate at that sandwich shop in Wmstown, that names all the sandwiches after actors? Do you remember the name? Good sandwiches, fun to order a Jessica Lange with cheese LOL

Tell me more places to go!
Bash Bish was a dusty hot place last August, I'll tell you! Fire Danger signs everywhere! I was afraid that just being so dry, I might trip and fall against a stone & a twig , making a spark, setting the Berkshires on fire~
It is that easy isn't it?

In Wmstown is also a lovely Asian art store that I got an antique jar in last year and plan to add to that collection this one Always a shopping opportunist!
