Where to stay in Taos and Santa Fe?

We are two adults and a 2 year old and plan to spend 3-4 nights in each place around the end of May. We prefer suites and condos near the center of town. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Also, can you recommend day trips from both?

Thanks!

Check the "Santa Fe Casitas" thread in the New Mexico folder.

Here is a link to the thread I did, that Lee Ann mentioned on Santa Fe casitas. These are 1 bedroom condos for rent, good location and nicely done.

http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...1&tid=35111589

In Taos, there's:
http://www.donfernandodetaos.com/ but it is not in the old town area. There is also a Comfort Suites near the above hotel.

Most of the hotels are not on Plaza either. They are pretty much on the same main road leading into town.

Depending in your budget, there are others places in Taos, near the plaza but are $$$. La Fonda, but not sure they have suites.

Try vrbo.com for places in Taos

Day trips - what do you like to see and do?

There are lots of threads on here already talking about things to do.

Type in Santa Fe or Taos in the search box to find them.

Also, click on the DESTINATIONS link at top of page and read Fodor's suggested itineraries.

Check out:

www.vrbo.com

www.santaferentals.com

www.kokoproperty.com

We've rented from all three companies for Santa Fe. I don't know what your budget is but take a look. There are many to rent in all price ranges and most will have an availability calendar as well. You will need to check with the owner on vrbo to confirm available dates.

There are several threads with the info you are needing to get you started on planning your trip. Put "Santa Fe" or "Taos" in the search box to find them.

Thanks for the responses. Has anyone stayed at Garretts Desert Inn? They are near the Plaza area in Santa Fe and reasonably priced, but I've read some bad reviews. I'm curious if it's really that bad.

Tally, we have and the last visit was last year I believe. I cannot recommend it. Dirty rooms (sheets and bathroom), worn fabrics, gross swimming pool (not that we were going to use it but still don't want to see it turning green). Its asset is its location near the plaza.

Check Hotel St. Francis as they have very reasonable rates as well, more European style and a better location, too.

Also, Territorial Inn. They have very reasonable rates and free breakfast. They are very close to the plaza, too. We've stayed there recently and recommend it. And free parking!!

www.territorialinn.com

Are you still interested in condos near the plaza? Or just checking all of your options? There are affordable condos that would give you a kitchen to save a little money.

If you are staying over Memorial weekend know that they will/are booking up now and the rates will be higher.

Thanks, Beachgirl. Guess we won't stay at Garretts! The Territorial Inn is booked. I'm also considering the Old Santa Fe Inn. Do you know anything about that one? I'm also looking into condos so if you have any recommendations, I'd love to hear them.

We've walked by Old Santa Fe Inn but never stayed there. However, it is a good location and the pics on the website look nice. Maybe you could put a reservation on a room while you check out condos.

If you give me a budget and # of days I'll go through the condos I've marked.

May is so pretty!

We have just booked a condo at vrbo for our family of six because (after many hours of research) we found the Santa Fe hotels either not appealing or outragously expensive.

A couple of years ago we have stayed with six persons in a wonderful suite at the La Fonda, but after renovation they have tripled their rates.

We never stayed in Taos, because Taos is an easy day trip from Santa Fe and on the way back you can have dinner at Rancho de Chimayo.

Attractions in the area:

- Bandelier Natl. Monument.
- White Rock Rio Grande Overlook.
- Taos Pueblo.
- Sanctuario de Chimayo.
- Madrid (ghost town with melodrama theater).

Santa Fe has enough attractions for three or four days.

Think about staying in Santa Fe for the whole time, especially when you rent a condo (no hassle with moving).

We'd really like to stay in Taos, just to have more time to explore.

Are there many hotels in the center of Taos? It seems like most are a few miles away. We'd really like to stay within walking distance of the center, shops and restaurants, for under $200. Any recommendations? If we stay a few miles away, has anyone stayed at the Sagebrush Inn?

taos inn is affordable, nice, and a hop skip and a jump away from the plaza. they have serval types of accomodations. Just take a look at their rooms on the website below.

www.taosinn.com

their restaurant Doc Martin's has very good food also and their bar is the local watering hole that has live music most nights with a nice fireplace to help relax you.

My favorite restaurant is in Taos - Joseph's Table. It's at the La Fonda in the plaza.

Oooops. Sorry. I just realized I already posted that above (taos Inn). If you don't like that, there are others like La Fonda but it is more expensive. We did the Taos Inn the first time we went but after that, we rented an apartment so we have the kitchen stuff we needed. There are a number of those through VRBO for Taos.

I just booked the Dona Luz Inn in Taos for an early April visit with my family (Husb & girls 9 & 7.) Husb & I stayed there in 1994 & found it to be funky, charming and extremely well situated a stone's throw to everything in the town center.
https://donaluz.powweb.com/

We also booked a deluxe King Suite at the Old Santa Fe Inn ($199/night in early April.) I called the Terratorial and they don't allow kids under the age of 16 (as they put out wine & cheese in the afternoon.) Their sister property is the Old Santa Fe inn & the woman that I spoke with sold me on it...3 blocks from the plaza, great accomodations, breakfasts, cookies & cocoa/coffee/tea in the afternoon. My kids are excited about that!

Good Luck!

I booked the Madonna room at La Dona Luz in Taos. It's a suite, so should work out well.

Still looking in Santa Fe though! There are a zillion listings on vrbo!

We're back and had a great trip!

Santa Fe
We stayed in this house (Casa Roybal).

Loved it!! $150 a night. What a deal! It's a great little house and I can't recommend it enough.

Taos
La Dona Luz Hotel

What a cool hotel! We had the Madonna room and loved it. Funky, but really comfy and nice.

Red River
Ponderosa Lodge

eh... It was ok. There are lots of fairly cheap and dumpy places to stay in RR and this is just one of them.
