Where to stay in San Diego
Can anyone recommend which area is best to stay in the San Diego area?
I was trying to decide whether it's best to stay in Coranado or in another part of the San Diego area? I don't really know anything about the area.
Also, are 2 nights enough to see the general area or is 3 better?
Oh, and we will be going in August.

San Diego is a very spread out place; wherever you stay you will have to drive to get from one place to another.
How many nights you need depends on which and how many attractions you want to take in.
We like to stay in La Jolla.

I always recommend out of town guests stay at either the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club or the La Jolla Shores Hotel because the beach there is great, you can walk to the neighborhood shops and restaurants or drive or walk into downtown La Jolla. It is also centrally located so you can easily drive south into San Diego or north into my neck of the woods - the North County coastal areas. As for the number of days here, it all depends on what you like to do.

We will have a car. We really just want to go just to see the town itself. We don't plan on doing any specific acitivity. Just walking around, shopping, enjoying the scenery. Wasn't sure if Coranado was a prettier place to stay or if there were certain places in San Diego that were better. I will look into La Jolla, and at the hotels suggested. Thank you!

San Diego, my favorite city to visit. We usually stay at the Bay Club Hotel & Marina, on Shelter Island. It's a quiet area with several other lodging facilities and is a very pretty location. It's also extremely easy to drive from this location to Old Town taking Rosecrans Street, to downtown taking Harbor Drive, to Balboa Park taking Laurel off of Harbor Drive, and is near Cabrillo Monument and Lighthouse. San Diego is an easy city to navigate a vehicle. Obtain a map off of Google (indicate maps, then San Diego).
Coronado Island is also attractive. You must visit Coronado Hotel and the beach. Also the skyline of San Diego is very attractive from the Old Ferry Landing which has a nice Farmers Market (I forget which day-probably Saturday} and a small shopping center. It's a nice place to have morning coffee sitting outside then catching the ferry to downtown San Diego. We stayed at a hotel within walking distance of the Old Ferry Landing-can't remember the name but it was nice. Again use Goggle.
If you folks like to walk you will have several things to visit within walking distance of the San Diego ferry landing. There's a couple of ships at different locations on the Embarcadero, the aircraft carrier USS Midway and the Star of India. There's a nice shopping area past the USS Midway location called Seaport Village, then if you walk north you can enter the Gaslamp Quarter. A restaurant we always go to on every visit is the Panda Inn, top floor of Horton Plaza Shopping Center in the Gaslamp Quarter. Many other good restaurants in this area. If you would like to see a baseball game Petco Stadium is in this area. Again to visit other areas such as Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, Cabrillo Monument, etc. you will need to use a vehicle, however you could eliminate driving a vehicle for one day staying on Coronado Island.
La Jolla is also nice as many places are in lthe San Diego area. We visited the 21 missions- it took us three different trips to do it but you have a couple nearby, one in San Diego and one in Oceanside, if you want to venture out of town a bit. Also a Wild Animal Park is near Escondido (sp?) and Julian is a nice place to visit.
I could go on and on about San Diego and that area but I would suggest at least 3 days or more for a visit.

Thank you for your suggestions. I will look into them. Hopefully the weather is nice in August. I think I need to look at San Diego on a map and just figure out where the different areas are. I just wanted to make sure there were no areas I should not go to. I'm sure everything is nice in San Diego though!

Rich? Then Coronado is for you. But the best selection of reasonable - classy restaurants are in Hillcrest (centered around Fifth and University for starters). Get a good AAA map to go from there. The famous zoo is only about a mile south of Hillcrest. And July 16-17 is Gay Pride Festival and parade. We are expecting 150,000 people at this biggest event in San Diego.

To expand on d_claude_bear comment, the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park are within walking distance of each other - a very short walk. It will be difficult to do both in a day but it may be possible with an early start. There is much to see at each venue.
When we go to Balboa Park we travel up Laurel Street which can take you through the gate of the park, however before crossing the bridge to the park there is a grassy park where there is usually lots of street parking space at no charge. We walk across the bridge into Balboa Park. The Zoo also has free parking in a hugh lot so take your pick.
If you have children there is a very nice merry-go-round located between the zoo and the park. If you are walking from one to the other you will pass by it.
