Where to Stay in Portland, and on Oregon Coast
Hi-
Heading to Portland in about a week and need to book some lodging ASAP. As we plan to be out and about most of the day we don't want to spend too much money on fancy lodging, but want somewhere conveinant and safe! could be a hotel, motel, b and b, inn, etc. Hoping to keep it around 120 a night or less. It also would have to be available even though its next week! Any ideas?
For the few days after that we will head to the Oregon coast and need somewhere to stay in Cannon beach, Astoria, or anywhere in between...any thoughts? A charming b and b or inn?
Thanks!

This link may help you with activities and hotel for Portland
http://www.travelportland.com
Hotels booked through here usually come with a complimentary breakfast, free parking and coupons for restaurants and shopping.
At this late date you may just have to choose what is available - I like staying at the Marriott Waterfront- walking distance to downtown but not in the heart of the city.
Not sure what to suggest for the coast- I think Cannon Beach and Seaside are going to be very busy and availability slim.

Finding a hotel on short notice in that price range in downtown will be really tough to do. If you go just a tad bit from the center, there is a La Quinta on Yeon and a Holiday Inn Express on Vaughn, and both of those are very close to NW Portland, but more in the industrial area so the prices are MUCH cheaper and rooms are almost always available. Still close enough to enjoy the sights of downtown and NW area though.
As for the coast, like sunbum mentions, it will be very hard to find a place in either Cannon Beach or Seaside at this late date. Most places in CB require a 2-3 minimum night stay in the high season. Your best bet is to get a list of all the hotels and start calling around and see if there is availability to squeeze in between other peoples reservations. We do this frequently with success, but can head over anytime, so if we were told "no", it wouldn't affect any travel plans. If either of those towns don't work out, look towards Manzanita. Astoria is not on the coast, but rather the river, FWIW.
If all else fails, you might head further south to Lincoln City or Newport, where there is lots more lodging and there is still a lot do see/do.

Try Priceline and bid the downtown zone. Look at biddingfortravel.com to see what kind of bids have been winning and what hotels they won. Sometimes they offer you Express Deals in the midst of bidding, and that is how we got a Marriott Residence Inn for $85 last month. It was a little out of the downtown area but had a super convenient streetcar stop right next door. The hotel itself was great.

We are definitely not stuck on staying cannon beach or seaport. Is Manzanita a cool area? IT is our first time to the oregon coast and we won't be there for too long, so obviously we won't see everything- we will have to pick and choose one way or the other!

Manzanita is nice little town. Not a whole lot there, but very laid back and a nice beach. It is only a few minutes up to Cannon Beach, so you could go there for more things to do, etc.
Cannon Beach and Seaside are only a few minutes apart, but they feel worlds apart. Seaside has the carnival atmosphere with bumper cars, corn dogs, that sort of stuff where Cannon Beach is more about shops/restaurants. The beaches at both are nice, but Seaside draws more kids (CB has a lot too, just not as many) and Cannon Beach has Haystack Rock and Ecola State Park, which to me are absolute musts.

If there are days you can't find lodging on the coast, you might want to look at Hood River. Shops, restaurants, $99/night hotel rooms (Hood River Hotel), and 20 minutes from gorgeous dramatic hikes through redwood forest and huge waterfalls.
We looked for accommodations last minute along the coast and only the most expensive hotel was available at over $300/night. Good luck and hope you guys luck out.

In the north end of Seaside I have stayed at the hostel.
The hike on the "Prom" is fun.
Just a little off the "Prom" at the south end is a replica of the spot where members of the "Corps of Discovery" boiled seawater to make salt to preserve meat for the trip back to St. Louis.

For Portland-- I stayed at the Portland International Guesthouse for about $80/night. It is within walking distance from downtown and the International Rose Test Garden; it was well-maintained and the owners are friendly. I actually was glad to have stayed there rather than downtown as it was near the lively 21st Street scene in the Alphabet District. My only concern for you is that it might not be available at this late date. Read the reviews on Trip Advisor. Have a great trip! Daniel
