Hi. I'm sort of new, and hope you all can help me. I am spending three weeks in California in November for 3 weeklong classes in different parts of the state. The first week's class is near Petaluma (a few miles east of the town), the second is in Silverado which I guess is near Lake Forest. The third week is in Hilmar, near Modesto.
I have lodging for the third week, but am looking for short term places to stay in or near Petaluma and Lake Forest, preferably an inn or non-chain motel that would be willing to give me a weekly rate. I'd like to spend less than $100/night if possible, and since I will be by myself, I'd like to be somewhere I felt safe (ie not a Motel 6 or equivalent). If there was a kitchen or laundry facilities, even better!
Thanks! I'm going to start another thread for my driving itinerary.
where to stay in Petaluma and Silverado/Lake Forest CA?

I'm topping... thinking of staying overnight in Petaluma after the annual "Eggs and Butter days" parade.
The Sheraton is our nicest and newest hotel in Petaluma, although I have no clue how expensive it is. Perhaps try hotwire.com for the best prices?
Stayed in the Shearaton Petuluma in August. Got a Priceline rate of $73 per night -- you can probably get it cheaper now. The hotel was lovely, staff was great, but the rest of Petuluma made me want to throw up! I apologize in advance to those who would want to defend Petuluma, but I had a very bad experience there!
What didn't you like about it? I can stay pretty much anywhere I like in the area, so maybe I'd be better off in Sonoma?
Silverado is a little spot up tucked the canyons among the foothills. I would check in Lake Forest. Be aware you will have a drive on some canyon roads that get pretty backed up during commute times. Can the school give you a suggestion? I don't know of any hotels or motels in Silverado. There may be some kind of B&B.
I live in the area of Southern Orange county where Silverado and Lake Forest are. There are no inns or motels in Silverado. Lake Forest is about 7 miles or so away from Silverado. It is a canyon and has homes and some restaurants, a library, general store and a post office. If you want to be located nearer to Silverado and close enough to be near Lake Forest then stay at the Hampton Inn in Foothill Ranch on Town Center Drive. It's only about 1 or so miles away from Silverado and 5 miles from Lake Forest. They are under $100 a night and I think they do give a weekly rate since the area caters to corperate people. It is a clean and safe area with lots of shopping and resaurants and movie theaters. Not at all congested. The traffic on Santiago Canyon Road which leads to Silverado doesn't have the congestion it used to since they put in a toll road. If you have any other questions regarding the area, just post back and I'll help.
Loved the Sonoma Valley, but thought that Petaluma was a pretty dumpy little town. We were excited about about visiting "154" a restaurant that had gotten great reviews. We ended up walking out after 20 minutes unattended (besides, the noise level was unbelievable)! We ended up picking up cold cuts, bread and cheese at a sueprmarket.
