Trip Ideas
You are in luck! just about everywhere on the West side is $300/nt or less. Expedia has Ritz for $299/nt mountain view. Like many resorts, the mountain view rooms often have ocean view too. Im partial to the Ritz, but go to tripadvisor and see which hotel/condo is best for you. You find one you like for $150-200
If you want a condo, go to VRBO.com
You will find many in your price range.
I'm sure the Ritz is nice, but it is at Kapalua, not Kaanapali or Lahaina. I personally like Kaanapali (a lot of other people think it's too busy, but I don't like solitude!). Kapalua is farther north, and the hotel is not right on the beach, you have to take a golf cart down to the beach. I'm not trying to dissuade you from the Ritz at all, just to be sure you know the difference between the various areas and hotel types. Kaanapali is a "development", meaning you drive in, and then there are a number of hotels and condo developments, as well as the Whaler Village Shopping Center. Starting from the south, you have the Hyatt, Marriott (timeshares), Kaanapali Alii (condos), Westin, Whaler Village, Whaler Condos, Kaanapali Beach Hotel, Sheraton (not sure if I've left any out). Sheraton is the north end of the main part of Kaanapali Beach - the beach path runs the entire length. Then NORTH of Black Rock are more developments like the Westin timeshare villas, I think an Embassy Suites Hotel (both of which they also call Kaanapali Beach, but being north of Black Rock, it's not what most visitors would consider Kaanapali Beach), Napili Bay, Kapalua, etc.
here's the other thread
i found my old thread yayyy...
thank you all for your help i finaaly got this site down with the help of other i know i have said this but i cant help but say it again i love this site..
we dont think we are going to go to the ritz i feel its to much to stay on a graveyard
we are looking at staying a the Royal Lahanina Resort Ken Really likes this place and he used to live in Florida on the beach and wants to stay on it for our honeymmon he has let me plan everything for the wedding that i think i should let him pick our honeymoon hotel.
any opions on this place?
When will you be there? It will make a difference in the price.
We stayed a few summers ago at the Outrigger's Aina Nalu, in Lahaina and LOVED it! It was easy to get to Ka'anapali and Napili but great just walking around to the different things in Lahaina. Much easier to walk to cheaper places to eat than in Ka'anapali, imo. Right now their rates are around $165.
Oops, forgot the link:

We stayed at an oceanfront condo at Papakea in Ka'anapali which was very nice. Rented thru VRBO. Prices were reasonable.
When are you planning to visit Maui? Many hotels are having promotions for the period between now and mid-April, such as Sheraton, Marriott, etc. We are going in June, and I found great discounts on Expedia. However, only if you get a package (I am looking into car + hotel). If you search for hotels only, the prices are the same as booking directly with the hotel.
ttt
we are looking to stay next August on the 8th for 1 week in 2010. we are lookinh at buying air hotel and car together to save some money. we afre from ny. the westside of ny in rochester.
I know it's too early to plan for 2010 summer. My personal preference is hotels in South Maui. I lived in Maui Prince and postively surprised by the location, setting, room quatlity etc. I paid $190/nt per room for a partial ocean view room. Double doors, large room and balcony, high ceiling, two showers and free parking etc.
I tend to think there are lot of good deals going on now given the state of the economy. To take advantage of the promotions, you may want to do the trip this summer instead of next year.
hx88, it's their honeymoon, so I doubt going a year early is in the cards!!
maybe not, maybe yes
Royal Lahanina is a fine hotel. I especially like the beach before it. And I can even see whales from room (in Feb only).
A very similar setting with Maui Prince. But M.P. facility is much newer and expansive.
If you want privacy, great beaches, and much more than just a hotel room, consider South Maui and especially the south end of Kihei. You would be much closer to the airport (only 8 mi to Kihei and also closer Haleakala and the "Upcountry" towns and sights. The latest edition of "Maui Revealed" lists the "Kihei Kai Nani" condominium resort as one of Maui's best values and gives it a gold bar rating. You can view individual condos for rent at the KKN by going to www.kiheikainani.com They have some videos which show you exactly what individual units look like.
The current prices are $168 per night (winter high season) and $118 per night from mid-April through mid-Dec. You can get an additional $5 per night off by making an on-line reservation. For that you get a complete living room, dining room, full kitchen, bedroom and bath with everything you need for a great vacation - including beach chairs, beach towels and other extras. We've stayed there many times and it's like having your own home on Maui. Some KKN condos are also for rent at vrbo.com and prices vary by owner. I don't know when your honeymoom will take place but there is currently an $88 special for the month of March. If you book your accommodations separately, try booking your flight and rental car together as a vacation package because that usually saves money. United "Vacations" as well as some of the other airlines book fly and drive packages. Pick up free Maui visitor guides at the airport for coupons and lists of things to see. You'll probably spend at least two days traveling so if you can, it's wise to plan at least 9 days total to have a whole week for enjoying Maui.
I guess to each his own. I eliminated Kihei Kai Nani from my list after reading "between the lines" and sometimes outright frank comments on Trip Advisor and elsewhere. If I'm renting a condo "on" the beach on Maui, then I want that preferably with a waterfront balcony right on the water-- not a complex of buildings that mostly have no beach view, and is across the very busy street from the beach. Just a personal preference on my part.
By the way, I'm not sure about the "latest edition" of Maui Revealed, but their current website says this about Kihei Kai Nani -- "It's across the street from Kama'ole II Beach, but the views of it aren't too great. In fact, avoid the buildings closest to the beach (1-3 and 13) due to traffic noise. (Since it's across the street from the water, closer to beach means closer to the road.) The buildings are cheap mid-'70s construction, but the rooms are clean and functional, and the kitchens are complete."
Where to stay depends on personal preferences and finances.
Most of the south Kihei condo resort complexes are across the road from excellent beaches - Kamaole I,II, and III and have no big hotels in front of them. Most, including the Kihei Kai Nani were built in the 70's-80's but have been remodeled and updated with new furniture, tile floors and new appliances. I agree that staying in a unit away from the frontage road (Kihei Rd) is preferable and more private.
We absolutely loved Maui Kai condo number 108. I know that they are always under $300 but we got a special rate for about $175/night. The condo is just stunning and oh so romantic, because you can walk right out onto Kaanapali Beach. You can check out more info on it at my travel website including pictures of the condo. http://www.feetontheglobe.com/trips/hawaii2008/westmaui
Oh, and the location of Maui Kai is fantastic. We looked at a lot of other condos in the same area and loved that these were actually on the beach (unlike a lot of the others which just opened up into a pool or a parking lot). Congrats on your wedding! Maui is wonderful.
Congrats on your upcoming marriage. Maui certainly is the place to go for a honeymoon.
We stayed at the Maui Kai in Feb-08. I can't remember what floor, but it was probably about 5. While the room was ok, the noise coming from the ocean was very loud at times - and I actually like the sound of waves. Luckily the bedroom was in the back or it would have been too loud to sleep - really. The proximity to the ocean certainly was close, but I wouldn't stay there again. We're planning our trip next Feb and have reserved rooms at the Kaleialoha Resort room 412. We haven't stayed here before but the rooms are ocean front and $185 a night. I have spoken with the owner and the manager and feel comfortable with them. As with other vrbo's, there's a kitchen and laundry facilities in the condo. This particular one has A/C. I have included the link.

thank you all for your help.
i have been a little busy lately with planning my wedding my DJ i have been planning with for two months now gave my wedding date away i tried to pay my deposit with him but he wouldn't send the contract he would make one excuse after another to find out he was playing me against another couple the whole time.
thank you all for all the information you have. we are right now looking at going to the Royal Lahanina Resort because of the extra activities in their package: a dinner cruise, buffet breakfast for two, and dinner each night, the luau for two, a massage for two on the beach or where ever we want and snorkeling, its everything we were looking at doing with a cruise to boot.
does any one no of any other honeymoon packages
does any
We love Kaanapali. Be sure you bring your binoculars for whale watching and just looking at boats out on the ocean.
Is the Kaanapali Trolley still running between the resort and Lahaina? (Free)
i heard there is something like a trolley or shuttle bus it costs 1 dollar us currency.
Ashley,
I don't think you should let your husband pick the hotel! SUre, you're deciding all the wedding stuff, but does he really care? Believe me, you will care if you have a nice honeymoon...coming from someone who had a terrible experience in St. Maarten, believe me!!
As for advice, I recommend you stay in the Kaanapali area as opposed to Lahaina - Kaanapali beach is one of the best in the world - why argue with that? True, it's busier than others, but it's picture-postcard beautiful, and the snorkeling can't be beat! My husband and I booked our package from travel-hawaii.com, and we were very happy - they give recommendations on each hotel and tell you what's good/bad about it. Also, once you put a deposit down, you can pay a little bit @ a time, so that might be good for you guys. We stayed @ the Sheraton Maui and the Westin Maui - both are fabulous. Lahaina is only a 10-minute car ride South, so you can still enjoy the shopping and sights there.
I recommend Kaanapali!!
totally agree with you saxbe..
If you can change, I would in a heartbeat.
Had great rooms at the Westin and the Sheraton at Black Rock but I prefer the Westin..so many great 4-5* hotels for less than $300..the Ritz was $289 a night with free breakfast and upgrade..
IMO, those honeymoon packages are just a waste of $$ that you can do own your own time and you choose instead of the hotel.
thank you saxbe and ksucat as always.
Kenneth likes the royal but like you to said i am looking at using a travel agent because they can tell us what and where is the best of everything i am starting to rethink the package my self because as you said we could just add those extras our selves but we do want to have breakfast at least included the all inclusive package at the royal is kind of enticing though.
thank you for your help i am going to look at those sites now i really like those hotels.
I have told Ken that i want him to decide the honeymoon because i feel like i haven't given him much to do with the wedding. But like you said Saxbe i don't want to have a bad time.
I just talked to a buddy in Maui, occupancy is way down so upgrades are (at least for now) common. Most resorts have 'Honeymoon packages' so just check with the resort you choose. I wouldnt choose a resort for the few extras in a package, but I have no doubt you would enjoy Royal Lahaina.
The Ritz has recently been renovated. Some of the nicest wood floors I have ever seen in a home, let alone in a Hotel, Marble bathrooms, dual closets, drawers in the bathrooms, top notch lanais, top notch beds, Music every night in the lounge, & all the benefits of Kapalua area guests. The best part of Kapalua is the seclusion, so you wont feel crowded. Yes it rains, but Honeymooners generally can find something to do during those breaks.
Consider a timeshare rental, typically lots more room than a hotel room. See www.redweek.com , www.tug2.net or www.marriott.com
Aerial photos of condos etc at http://www.wizardpub.com/maui/mauaerials.html
we are not going to stay in the cottages at The Royal Lahaina we have been warned by a few against it we might stay in the tower but we might go to The Ka'anapali Beach For our hooneymoon i really want to go some where Hawaiian and romantic and just like like a queen for 1 week
Sorry i have been very busy planning my wedding and really haven't had a chance to visit fodors in a while.
However We have found a Condo to stay at through VRBO at only $160 a night, with full kitchen, pool, real full ocean view the place is better than half the resorts in lahaina you would have to pay about $600 a night to get a suite that looks like our condo...
I just want to thank every one for all their help.
And if you are looking to find a great place in maui for a great price do what every one told me to do go to VRBO.com
Are you going to spill the beans and give us a link to the condo you're renting? Or at least tell us what building it is in?
By the way, on my recent trip I had a condo at Kihei reserved for a week, but just about a week before arrival I got an email telling me there was going to be a lot of exterior work to the building including drilling and pounding. They offered me a couple of other choices which I didn't like, so they refunded my money and I ended up staying at the Pioneer Inn in Lahaina. That place may not be for everyone, but I loved it. And I was thrilled after a couple trips to Kihei that I ended up in Lahaina instead. Much preferred by me!!!
My husband and I are also a young couple and we love the Westin Maui Resort & Spa in Kaanapali! There are two Westin's in Kaanapali - we stayed at the one that is NOT the timeshare and loved it. The pool is awesome and has waterfalls and waterslides =) And the location is awesome right on the beach.
