As part of a road trip we'll be spending the night of Saturday, June 23rd in Kansas City. We'll be coming in from the east (St. Louis), arriving in the evening. The next day we want to see the World War I museum and the Nelson-Atkins before heading out of town. I was thinking of staying near the Plaza but most of the places there aren't available for that night. Other suggestions, perhaps a little to the east along I-70? Since it'll be just a quick overnight stop we don't need a lot of amenities. Budget is pretty open, probably up to $300 a night, but would prefer under $200. Thanks!
Where to stay in Kansas City for one night in June?

The Hotel Philips is a lovely little hotel downtown. Not far from I-70 or the WW1 Museum. It shows rooms that night for $229. http://www.hotelphillips.com/
I would highly recommend the Westin at Crown Center in KC. It is a great hotel and very close to what you want to visit. We stayed there many times and have loved it each time.
If possible, I too would recommend an in-town spot such as the Westin recommended above or the Sheraton (formerly the Hyatt) at Crown Center. You would be close to both places you want to visit, and also Union Station and the Freight House restaurants. A little east on I-70 will put you in typical suburban chain hotels and motels...blah.
The Westin Crown Center looks great but it's well over our budget for that night. The Hotel Philips is a possibility but I was also considering staying somewhere further out along I-70. Any area that's particularly convenient?
The Sheraton isn't available for that night. And actually I don't mind suburban blah for a quick stopover for the night. If I was staying for the weekend it would be a different matter.
Well, if you want to stay off I-70, then look at the area near the stadiums; there is a Drury Inn there and there may be some other hotels nearby. If you go even further east, then the Independence/Blue Springs area comes to mind. There is a Hilton Garden Inn and Hampton Inn in that area.
The Hilton Garden Inn in Independence is nice. There's also a Holiday Inn Express there, as well as a new Drury Inn and a Staybridge Suites. All those are at the I-70/Selsa Road interchange.
The WWI museum will take several hours to do in properly. I just went there on a field trip with my son's high school World History class. The Nelson takes a bit, too. That'll be a long day to do both in one. You might consider doing one on the day you get to KC, then one the next morning. If you're going to do that, you'll want to stay closer in.
There's a Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown. There's also the Mariott/Muehlebach, close to the Hotel Phillips. Also the Hotel President.
Did you check the Raphael? What about the Holiday Inn Express in Westport on Westport Road?
Also, there's a Courtyard by Marriott on Main Street at Grand, very close to the WWI museum.
I was just able to book Hotel Philips on hotels.com for $115 a night plus tax! Thanks to all for your help!
Awesome! Have fun!
