I've been to Kaanapali before and stayed at The Whaler and we enjoyed ourselves...but that was 20 years ago! We'd lke to stay someplace within walking distance of shops, and restaurants and fun stuff, but stay in a place that isn't completely over run with kids. It's all about the beach for me. Swimming and sitting on a lounge chair under a big umbrella on a fairly quiet beautiful beach is my idea of heaven. We also want a kitchenette as well.
I've been looking at the hotels along the Kaanapali strip...and those a little more north of that too, but I heard the beach was better more south? I also like the idea of a privately rented out condo with a kitchenette, so we can see in advance what our room would look like. Any ideas what part of Kaanapali, or Maui, would suit us?
Where to stay in Kaanapali area for two 50 yr old adults without kids?

Check out the Napili Sunset - http://www.napilisunset.com/ which is just north of Kaanapali. Very nice lawn in front of the units - a fairly quiet beach - and a good size market not that far away - as you come in from the main road.
Thanks. I just checked it out, and yes, great beach. I was looking for something more than two stories high though...just to get more of a view. I checked out The Whaler again, just cause its familiar, and its fun to be able to walk everywhere close by. Maybe the north side of Tower 1, cause its quieter and nice views. Any other recommendations for Kaanapali area, that has a semi-private beach area?
If you're looking for quieter beaches, you will want to head north of Black Rock. The only place we've ever stayed in that area in the Royal Lahaina - just for a couple of nights and I don't recommend it for any longer than that!
While we've not stayed in any of these, we have strolled through the grounds of the newer Honua Kai, which is lovely, and the Westin Villas look gorgeous. The beaches there would be a bit quieter than on the Kaanapali main strip.
We have tried other places and always go back to the Whaler. You almost don't need a car when you stay there, you can walk to every thing. Check VRBO we found our last condo at the Whaler there, it was nicely updated and over looked the Black Rock area.
I guess you can't have everything. The convenience of the Kaanapali strip, or a quiet beach. Tough call. Maybe a resort that has a nice grassy area overlooking the beach would be good in the Kaanapali area. Sort of a compromise. Are there any like that?
When we were in Maui, Kaanapali was overrun with kids and families. Not at all quiet and relaxing. I second the recommendation for Napili, it was the beach we found ourselves driving to almost every day.
