Where to stay in downtown philly?

We are going to a convention this February and I am wondering what a good, cheap hotel would be to stay at? The convention is at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. We are hoping to be within walking distance because we won't be renting a car. Any suggestions?

Rodeway Inn Center City is what I would call "cheap" for downtown Philly 1208 Walnut StPhiladelphia (215) 546-7000

It is 2 blocks south of the Marriott on Market St. I never stayed there personally, but would consider it if I needed to return to the city. Good neighborhood.

Since the Convention Center is on Market Street, and the Market-Frankford Line (aka "Blue Line") will get you from anywhere on Market to anywhere else on Market quickly and safely (at least more safely than crossing a street with Philly drivers), feel free to stay at any place that is within a block of Market Street. Look for amenities and budget, then ride the subway for $3 round trip.

And for those who (correctly) point out that you don't want to stay on Market west of the University Section of town, note that AREN'T any hotels on Market Street in that area -- for a reason.

> we won't be renting a car.

Philly is a city where having a car is not only unnecessary, it would be wasteful nuisance.

I don't tend to stay in hotels here (can't say I haven't, though!) as I live here, but wanted to suggest you look into the Alexander Inn; it gets a lot of positive reviews and would be within reasonable distance. (About a ten minute walk or three minute bus ride--and straight up 12th street.)

Center City Philadelphia is very walkable and the public transportation works; a car is most definitely not a good idea.

Although I walk home through Chinatown often, I would personally not feel comfortable at hotels on Arch behind the convention center, or at the new Meridian (which I dislike due to its proximity to Probation and Parole and that block being desolate at night). otherwise, anything listed as Center City, old city, historic area would be easily walkable. There are several excellent restaurants on 13th on the way to the Alexander. The holiday inn in old city (not the one on walnut) may be a good, budget oriented option.
