Where to stay in DC?
Hi there! I'm heading to DC for my first trip and have lots of great things planned that I'm excited about. We are looking for a hotel and I could use your help with recommendations. I'd like something nice but not over the top $$$$$. More contemporary/adult oriented vs. family oriented. What would you suggest I check out? We will be going the 2nd week of April and think the areas we probably want to stay in are Georgetown, Foggy Bottom, Capitol Hill, Downtown or Lafayette Square??

Willard Intercontinental would always be my first pick. It's expensive, but costs can vary depending on date. Check it out. If it's in your price range, take it! You will not be disappointed.
Otherwise, tons of good hotels, and I'm sure if you narrowed your needs a little bit more, you will get lots of advice.

The Willard is an old style classic hotel, and is anything but contemporary (since you said you were looking for contemporary). For downtown (and close to MCI Center area, Chinatown, the classic DC sights on the Mall and White House area, and in a revitalized area) perhaps look at places like the Hotel Monaco. For D.C., that is a pretty happening place.
What kind of things do you have planned? It might help focus the areas to look in.

I'd agree with previous post about giving more info on what you are looking to do. Note that Georgetown is not that convenient to Metro lines (our local subway - clean, safe and highly recommended), so I would probably recommend staying elsewhere, unless you don't care about taxi costs or are planning on spending most of your time in Gtown.

contemporary and adult-oriented makes me think of the Hotel George, weekend rates can be about $149.
While the Willard isn't contemp, it does occasionally have some specials that almost make it a shame not to stay there.
Monaco is also a good rec.

Great suggestions from the above two posters. Here are the websites:

The Willard is very nice, but practically defines the term "old school". Not contemporary in any sense. http://washington.intercontinental.com/

Great you guys thank you ! I love Kimpton Hotels so will definatley check those out.
Will take note about Georgetown and the metro too.
We plan to do the norm- Holocaust Museum, Museum of Art, the monuments, Smithsonian, lots of dining, wandering outside parks, etc. I think we definately want to be in the metro area!

WHICH Smithsonian?
Look at the DC Circulator bus ( http://www.dccirculator.com ) for easy, frequent and inexpensive service between Georgetown and Union Station. Also another loop runs between SE Waterfront & Convention center. Currently, if you save your receipt, the $1 fare is good for the entire day.
The Georgetown Shuttle ("the blue bus") has service between Georgetown and metrostations at Rosslyn, Foggy Bottom, and Dupont Circle. Fare $1. or 35 cents with a valid Metro transfer pass, which you get from a dispenser next to down excalator in the station you ENTER the Metro system on.

From the hotels you're considering, Air & Space is best reached from L'Enfant Plaza Metro station, which is served by every line except Red. Next best station would be Federal Center SW, served by Blue & Orange. There are something like a dozen different Smithsonian museums in DC alone, which is why I questioned, including Renwick near your proposed hotels. I am a "techy" yet I find the Museum of American History the most fascinating and was surprised at how interesting the Postal Museum was ... next door to Union Station.

Although I love the Georgetown area, I would probably try to stay somewhere closer to the regular Metro lines where you didn't have to take an additional shuttle. There is so much to see in DC that I would want to maximize viewing time and minimize transportation effort.

We had a great trip in DC, our stay at the Topaz was good. We ended up checking out each of the Kimpton hotels as they had the best bars
Holocaust museum was definatley the most interesting and moving of the trip. Also saw a great exhibit of Cezanne at the National Museum of Art and the small exhibit of the Book of Judas at the National Geographic Society. Lot's of walking around to monuments and buildings.
Wonderful meals at Cordoroy, Citronelle and The Oval Room. Ok meals at Bistrot du Coin and Jaleo. Excellent brunch at the Tabard Inn.
Thanks of all the advice!
