We just decided to do a quick trip to Colorado arriving May 9-26, 2012. Flying into Denver (airfare was cheapest) but want to stay around Colorado Springs.. Would like to do a vacation Rental for the week maybe by homeaway or VRBO. Would like to have our own kitchen. Any recommendations on places would be helpful. Would consider a B&B it isn't too expensive.
We want to be able to hike at least one trail a day for several hours and then do a little driving around and exploring. What area would be a good central point to explore out from. Not familiar with this area at all so any suggestions would be quite helpful.
Would also like to get down to the sand dunes one day. I know it is about a 3 hour drive but want to try to get there.
Thanks in advance for any tips.

You might consider the cute/historical town of Manitou Springs - a 10? minute drive - toward Pikes Peak - from C. Springs. They have a number of B & B's which might cut you a deal that time of year, and they also have hotels and maybe homes/condos 4 rent? http://www.manitousprings.org/
Personally I would choose a different place--up toward RMNP, or further into the mountains around Breckenridge or Vail--or even on toward Aspen.
With that length of time you could even choose two places.
AND with that length of time, I would not miss a trip to Mesa verde for several days.
I liked Colorado Springs but we stayed there in part because we had family there. I liked Garden of the Gods and it was interesting and I'm glad I did it, but I didn't "love" it. And Pike's Peak we did the little train to the top, which was lots of fun, but was NOT hiking.
I think Gretchen has the right idea. Our day trip to Breckenridge was absolutely beautiful. We did the 3 hour trail ride and it remains my favorite trail ride ever. My brother wants us to come back one of these days and stay at the YMCA property by RMNP. If you have children, you might consider that as well.
