Where to stay in Boston and how to get to Stowe
Hi all,
I'm trying to put together a trip to the States for my elderly parents. They are first going to San Francisco, then Vegas, then Boston, and finally Toronto before heading back home again.
I know a fair amount about all those places except Boston. I know nothing about where are the best places to stay (on a pretty tight budget), what to do there and how to see the foliage and where!
I was thinking about doing a train trip up to Stowe for a couple of nights. Is this do-able?
Any advice you can give me would be fantastic thank you. I seem to be going round in circles here trying to sort this out!

You don't say when the trip is scheduled but I'll assume October since you mention foliage. October is one of the busiest months for visitors in Boston so the hotel rates are higher along with the demand. What is the budget? Back Bay, Theater District, Downtown, and Quincy Market/Waterfront are all good areas for hotels. Boston is a compact city and it's easy to get around.
They might be better off taking a foliage bus tour from Boston. Look at Gray Lines for tours. Stowe, Vt., is reachable by bus but it is not convenient to get there by train, and even going by bus will require at least one transfer.

I can't tell you about where to stay in Boston but I can tell you about how to get to Stowe by train from Boston.
The Lake Shore Limited leaves Boston South station at 11:55AM.
Take the LSL to Springfield. You have about a 1 hour layover until the Vermonter arrives. Take the Vermonter to Montpelier Vermont. It is your choice whether you want to spend the night in Montpelier or get a ride the 15 miles to Stowe.
To get from Stowe to Toronto by train will be a bit of a problem without spending a night in New York and taking the Maple Leaf in the morning. The trip from New York (NYP) to Toronto (TWO) takes a bit over 12 hours depending on how long the train spends at the border.

CW- the budget is around £100 per night maximum, less if possible and yes this is for the 3rd week of October. I will check Gray Lines thank you.
Tomfuller - thank you for the train info. I just think a train would make a nice change from all the flying!

Juliecabs, $150 U.S. is low for Boston at most times of the year, but especially in October. The weekend of the 17-18 October is the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston. It's a huge event and hotel rooms at any price will be sparse. I hope they aren't planning to be here on those dates.
Do your parents have any mobility issues? Staying outside of the city is not ideal and would involve some commuting and the rates are not necessarily that much cheaper. Is there any possibility that they could increase the budget?
That said, look at the Boston Common Hotel, the Oasis Guest House, Midtown Hotel, John Jeffries House, and Hotel 140 Berkeley. They are all more "budget" options, but are well-located.
