where to stay?
I'm looking on priceline and am not sure if all the areas are good to bid in? I want to see the major sites and assuming that everything would be in the downtown area, but that area seems to expensive.

I'm sorry, it was late at night. Richmond Virginia. It's not that the area is too expensive for my wallet, but it seems a lot more expensive than the other areas, and the other areas don't seem like they are that far away.

obie, I love The Omni and The Commonwealth Park Suites!
Both are right at the Shockoe Slip and the Shockoe Bottom which is good dining and shopping.
I know locals may balk but I love The Tobacco Company for great food! It was one of the first places to help refurbish the SS and SB. Beautiful restoration of an old tobacco warehouse.
The Commonwealth Park suites is quite reasonable and it has huge wonderfully appointed rooms. Living room/dining room with large marble bathrooms and big rice beds in the bedrooms.

The hotels near the airport are often quite inexpensive weekends. If you stop at one of the tourist information offices (there might be only 1 these days), they'll help find you lodging. I've often used those "coupon books" you pick up at reststops & restaurants on/near the interstates.
If you were stopping at Richmond on your way to Williamsburg, consider staying a little further south. Good deals are often to be found around Petersburg, as well as historical Civil War sites/museums. Hopewell is a town I've been planning to visit, as it looks interesting.

Are you planning on spending a lot of time downtown? Which areas would you like to spend time in? If you're looking to save a few dollars, there are a few hotels west of town that may be less expensive. Check out the Hampton Inn or Amerisuites in Innsbrook (about 10 miles west of the city). You won't be right in the middle of everything, but the area is nice and you'd be close to the highway (I-64) and could get into downtown fairly easily.
