Ninth Avenue in the West 40's and 50's has a good selection of inexpensive restaurants. You'll find Italian, Greek, Chinese, Thai, etc.

I have a friend who lives in that area. For Italian he likes Maria Pia--on 51st(?)between 8th & 9th. For fun delicious food we always go to Vinyl on 9th & 54th. If you are still on speaking terms with the French, Tout Va Bien is great(love the Vichysoisse)--on 51st betw. 8th & 9th. He also likes Island Burgers on 9th in that area. I might be off by one street on these but I do know that the avenues are correct!
