Where to go with 7-8 days?
My DH and I have the opportunity to get away for about a week while my in-laws keep our 3 young children. We'd really like to do something romantic, relaxing. We are going at the end of Sept-early Oct. We love the ocean, but are not "beach" people (ie we don't like to lay out). He would like a cruise (which we've never done) but I'm nervous about sea sickness. We live in Colorado. We were considering Venice and Florence but don't think it's enough time (esp since the tickets are close to $1K each right now). Any advice would be appreciated!!! Thanks!

I have pretty bad motion sickness and cannot tolerate small boats, but found that the large cruise ship we took was totally fine. It's so big you hardly feel any movement at all.
But another thought that time of year would be to go to northern New England! You can be near the water and the leaves will be turning color. There are lots of romantic inns, and plenty of activities and relaxing to do. If you want a bit of excitement added in, you can do Boston for 2-3 days and then something more country.
I don't have any suggestions on specifics of towns or lodging as I've never done this kind of trip. But it's on my to-do list someday!

I want to try one of the canal cruises in Europe, in particular France. The thought that you can get off and on, cycle along the barge or head out and sightsee and then catch up with the ship appeals to me. I rarely get motion sickness but did get seasick on my first (and last) cruise to the Bahamas when I was a teenager. The barge trip appeals to me...no motion sickness, unpack only once and a unique way to see Europe at the same time!

Thanks for the ideas! A friend suggested New England, too -- do you think it will be cold there? Any thoughts on Hawaii? We've eliminated Florida b/c of hurricane season.
Thanks again!

Hawaii! I love Maui, Oahu, the Big Island and Kaui - you can't go wrong. Our anniversary is in October and we've been twice this time of year - perfect! There is much to sightsee on each Island all offering something a little different. For romance, Kaui or Maui but the beaches are better in Maui for swimming. We don't lay out either - you could stay in the water for hours.

In late September/early October you're most likely to find temps in the 60s during the day in New England. Having snow that time of year would be virtually unheard of, but it could certainly be colder than 60 and rainy. You just never know anywhere you go. But I'm thinking that on a romantic vacation in a cozy inn in New England, you can always find something to pass some time if it's cold or rainy.

One other thing - you may find airfare to Hawaii almost as expensive as Europe right now (but who knows what sales would come up for either before fall). But at least they use the same currency as us in HI, so you don't have to deal with the expensive Euro there!

In the $800 - $1000 price range you can get a fly/drive package to Italy, a week on the beach in Costa Rica and a air/lodging package that includes Venice. If you haven't checked out gotoday.com, they have lots of options. I've not used them yet, but their feedback has always been very positive.
Costa Rica is absolutely beautiful and amazing.

How about combining New England with a cruise. Both Princess and Carnival sail out of NYC for 7 day cruises to various ports, incl. Boston, Portland ME, Halifax, Sydney and others in Canada. I'm booked on a Carnival in September but Princess has a ship going the same day. Just a thought. I agree that with these monster-ships I've never felt enough motion to be queasy and have never taken any medication either which some folks take as a precautionary measure.

You mentioned Hawaii on your thread... that would be a great spot. Since you'd only be going for a week, I'd settle for one island. Another suggestion would be California...fly into San Francisco, rent a car, and drive to Napa Valley for 3-4 nights (if you're a wine drinker)... then perhaps drive down the coast to Big Sur for a few nights... and fly home again out of San Francisco.
