Where to go in Maine?
Hello Fodorites....we live in NY and want to take a long weekend in Maine this summer....it's on our "to do" list and we've just never gotten to it. No idea where to go though....looking for lake, trees and lobster! Just a nice relaxing few days away. Any suggestions on area and/or hotel, inn? Prefer not to spend more than $300 a night.
Thanks very much.

Can't go wrong with Rockland, ME. You will love a stay at Berry Manor Inn, where they keep fresh blueberry pie available round the clock! It's an easy walk to downtown where you can stroll and window shop after dinner at one of the great local restaurants. Don't leave town without a visit to the Farnsworth Art Museum. Even if you are not an art fan, you'll enjoy the peaceful setting and the pure Americana of the Wyeth exhibits. There's plenty to do in the Rockland area...quick trips to nearby wineries even if it just to appreciate the beauty of the drive and not the wares. Made a Maine trip from Texas with a girl pal a few years ago. Rockland was one of the highlights. Another highlight was finding a small park somewhere in the area where they sold and boiled lobster which we ate at a nearby picnic table with a bottle of blueberry wine we had purchased earlier in the day! Regretfully, I cannot remember where the park was...but I remember the lobster and clam chowder fondly.

Kennebunkport is one Maine, Sebago Lake and north through Bethel to the Rangeley Lakes is another, Casco Bay from Portland to Boothbay Harbor is yet another, Penobscot Bay from Friendship to Lincoln through Rockland and Camden is still another, Mt Desert Island is a different world, and all the rest of the coast to Quoddy Head has its partisans.
I think the area from Brunswick to Camden is very rewarding. It includes Rockland and the adjacent Rockport, all sorts of fishing villages like Tennants Harbor, iconic lighthouses, a college town, and irocky islands galore.
We all, like cwells, have our favorite lodging. We liked the Hartstone Inn in Camden a lot. Great food and lots to do both in Camden and nearby Rockland.

Did a day trip to Kennebunkport and Wells yesterday. Although the stores weren't crowded, there were few parking spaces in the public lot. Not all the restaurants were open yet and frankly, it wasn't the best of lunches. Rachel Carson Wildlife Area was very quiet so a good place to stroll (dogs on leashes) but it's probably busier in summer. My friend loves this part of Maine but I agree with Ackislander. There are different Maines and southern Maine is not my favorite. Unfortunately, going further north adds to travel time.
I think I might recommend staying in Portland, taking the mailboat cruise, and one day trip further north to someplace like Rockland (highly recommend Waterman's Beach for lobster in the rough, wear a hat and sunglasses so you can take a table by the water).
For some quiet time, Fort Williams Park in South Portland has a beautiful view of Casco Bay or another friend recommends getting off the mailboat at Peak's Island and spending the day there.

There's a motel called the Beach Cove Inn that sits on a small tranquil lake...rowboats are provided for guests and the best part is that it's just a mile from downtown Boothbay Harbor and the ocean. And the lobster. Here is a photo from the motel's front lawn:

If you really want to be surrounded by trees, head to Sebago Lake or Moosehead Lake, there may be some cabins/cottages still available for this summer though most rent only by the week in July and August. Or consider the Migis Lodge.
