I am tired of eating in chain restaurants! I love traveling to small towns and eating in the local spots, far from the interstate highways and hotels. I like a place that is locally owned, where dinner is $15.00 to $20.00 and food served is basic American (chicken, steak, prime rib, roast beef, etc.)
Tell me about your favorite small town 2 or 3 star American style food restaurant. Thanks!
Where is the best small town restaurant in the United States?

The Doverpike In Newark, DE
Good food!
I've never actually eaten there, but Mary McCrank's in Chehalis, WA is supposedly fabulous.

If you want to click on the Menu link, the clickable area is a little off--you need to click on the area near the top left of the word "Menu." On the next menu, click on the "Lunch" or "Dinner" link to see the food and prices. Sounds exactly like what you're looking for.
TaMolly's in Sulphur Springs, TX. Free chips and hot sauce and the meal will be under $6.00. Lunch is even cheaper. I-30 and Broadway.
It was even mentioned on the post about best Tex-Mex in Texas.
Science Hill in Wakefield-Scearce Galleries in Shelbyville, Kentucky. Incredible food in a historical setting (on the Registry of National Historic Places).
For info on local restaurants serving great regional American food, check out www.roadfood.com. We've tried a number of the places reviewed and have enjoyed them all.
Randy, how's the writing career going?
Congrats on finding a way to do research without ever getting up off your butt and checking things out yourself. Your readers have no idea you've never been to any of the places you're writing about.
