Where is best hotel for cancer patient?
I'm taking my bother to DC on 8/17 for a cancer appt at Washington Hospital on Irving. We'll have two evenings free. He won't be out sightseeing but I'm looking for something not too far from the hospital that has a suite with kitcheonette. Something in a good neighborhood in case he wants to walk around some outside or go out to eat. Sounds like the Caryle and Summerfield Suites (Wyndham) in DuPont Circle might work or the Washington Suites -Georgetown in Foggy Bottom Area. ALso see on here that the Embassy Suites are an option. I'm not familiar with all these. Does anyone out there have suggestions on wich might best meet his special needs for this trip?

I'm not very familiar with the DC area - but will mention that the cancer hospital that I'm treated at in Charleston, SC has a local home for out-of-area patients / family to stay at. Also, they have special discount rates for local motels while you're there. Have you checked if Washington Hospital provides this for the patient and family?
Good luck!

I used to have business clients at this hospital and I had to travel there frequently.
Washington Hospital Center is a great hospital but it is in a very depressed area - not somewhere where you would want to stay.
The closest area would be hotels in the convention center area - however, there is not a lot going on at night in this area.
The best area to stay is Dupont Circle. I used to stay at the Residence Inn on P Street. All rooms have kitchenettes. I liked this area because at night there are many great restaurants that you can walk to very easily.
The one problem is that the cab fare to the hospital generally runs about $15-18 each way.If you leave the hospital after 4 PM it is tough to get a cab - not impossible ....but tough.
I hope that this helps you! Good luck!

There are several hotels in Washington that are literally on top of Metro stations. If you tell us which station or line is closest to the hospital, we might be able to come up with a hotel that's not literally close to it, but IS convenient via Metro, involving a minimum of walking, and is in a neighborhood that you'd enjoy.
For instance, there's an Embassy Suites in Alexandria that's across the street from a Metro station, and another one that's literally up the escalator from the Friendship Heights station and sitting atop a mall in a nice area. So even if these are not close to the hospital, they'd be convenient -- just ride the metro-- and both are in areas that meet your other criteria like walkable neighborhood, kitchens and restaurants.
Wherever you decide to stay, check for good rates at washingtondchotels.com. And good luck to your brother.

Peachtree,
I am assuming you will be driving your brother. By car, Wash. Hosp. Center is less than 10 minutes from either Dupont or Convention center area (except rush hour). A cab will cross two zones and should be less than $7. Dupont is probably quicker since you avoid downtown traffic. It's also a nicer place to stay. Hope this helps.

Just to add, I agree with the other comments. DC is a small city, so nothing is that far by cab, which might be an easy way to get to WHC (a really good facility in a not so hot neighborhood, although it is close to Catholic Univ. and the National Basillica). Dupont Circle would be fine, as would the Convention Center hotels (which are near Chinatown and the Penn Quarter).

Summerfield Suites are an ideal choice for you. We stayed there one week, good size suite, free breakfast, very close to metro and restaurants. Great area to walk around in, CVS up the corner. It can't be beat. Try their website for Wyndham Webrates, we got $94/night for 1 BR suite.

Peachtree:
Contact Washington Hospital Center, ask for someone in Social Work or in Admissions. Tell them what you need. They very likely have a contract rate with hotels for persons just like you and your brother. My hospital has a deal that cuts about 50% off of the best rate--that may be important to you as week day rates are high in DC even when Congress is not in session.
Good luck to you and your brother!

Thanks to each of you for the rsponses. We are driving to DC so I had planned to drive to the hospital, but will consider the metro. The hospital does list a few hotels on their web site and the Carlyle was from that last. I'll check the Summerfield and then probably take that or the Carlyle. Thanks again for your help.

I would not recommend the Carlyle. It bills itself as "Art Deco." It seems like that is just a euphemism for "really old." Tired old indoor-outdoor carpeting, grungy metal cabinets in the kitchenette, spongy mattress on the bed, and a tiny ill-equipped bathroom. I was very disappointed when I stayed here.

YOu can't take the metro to WHC because there isn't a stop anywhere nearby. That's an area outside the business district with a lot of hospitals in it and the VA home.
I don't think there is a good suites hotel nearby, but DC isn't that large that it will take you that long to drive there. If you are considering suties around Dupont Circle, there is also a Marriott Residence Inn on P st just to the west of the circle. Off course, the Embassy Suites nearby are very nice.
I think the easiest to get to WHC would actually be Capitol Hill Suites and that's a pleasant area to walk around right near the Library of Congress, etc. There is a metro station nearby if you want to use it, but it wouldn't be that difficult to drive from there to WHC as you get over to Capitol St in a bit and then it's a straight shot up North Capitol which is a big street and easy to drive on. WHC is right off it. I drive that way home a lot and used to live around Capitol Hill Suites and think that would be easier for driving and parking than around Dupont Circle. If you're only there a couple days, it may not matter that much. I've also heard the Carlyle is nothing special and I would avoid going over to Georgetown or Foggy Bottom.
