We will be driving to NOLA for three nights and then onto Florida. I certainly want to visit the French Quarter frequently but I don't have to stay there, do I? The hotel costs at this time of year, on the weekend, are pretty high. and the parking fees are out of sight.

Can someone recommend a hotel or B&B with access to the French Quarter by streetcar or other public transportation that might be within reason? I have a physical disability so I want to limit my walking to those areas I want to see - not getting to them.

If we do stay in or near the French Quarter, are the public parking lots a good and safe option?

If you want a cheap place to stay your best bet is to stay in a motel in Metairie and drive in each day. You can park for less than $20 for the day. There are loads of garages near the cruise terminal in the warehouse district, and you can take the streetcar from there.

You don't have to stay in the French Quarter. NO has loads of huge convention hotels in the CBD and Warehouse District, and you could also stay in one of those. I don't know when you're going, but I've never found lodging costs in New Orleans to be particularly high in the summer. In fact, my experience has been that they are downright cheap except if there is a particularly large convention or event going on. I'd throw out a wider net and see what you find. Otherwise, cheapskate it out to the suburbs, and you'll probably save money and be happier.

I'm curious too why you think the prices are out of sight. Compared to Centerville, Nebraska -- sure, but not compared to most major tourist cities.

Frankly, I'd still stay in the French Quarter than stay out and drive back and forth and pay to park for the day.

Hotel rates are lower in the hot summer months.

Meant to add, we stayed at the Place d'Armes Hotel in the French Quarter and the prices are very reasonable. You will have to pay for parking but probably no more than you would pay for transportation into the city or at a short term city parking lot.

A sister hotel that is also well located is the French Quarter Hotel. I suggest you check these out.
