Maybe 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica? Actually, any upscale mall will do.

Thank you Azzure and Ivk. We're looking at reservations for Venice Beach, so the 3rd Street Promenade would be good for that. I'll look up the ones you posted Ivk. Thanks!

oops, I did not notice you were the OP, Kathie! We have spent a fair amount of time in LA.

Melrose is fairly notorious in LA for fun boutiques and restaurants.

And a friend tells me that frequently a "star" will tweet that she just dropped off her clothing at a particular thrift store, so folks can go there and grab them.

If you are looking for a hotel in Venice Beach, my favorite little place there is the Inn at Venice Beach, a Pacifica property which was recently renovated. I've stayed there a few times. Parking is just $8/day. Walking distance to the pier, shops, restaurants, and craziness of Venice Beach.
