It was a fantastic year of travel and making lots of nice memories!!! ***kim***
Wildflower, I only made 2 short trips within Colorado, and I didn't report on either one. The first was backpacking in an obscure (and beautiful) area, around Sargent's Mesa, near Saguache. We ended it with a trip to Great Sand Dunes and a forgettable night at the Movie Manor in Monte Vista. I think I've written a little about Movie Manor on other posts. The trip to Denver was a driving trip from Durango, just for 2 nights. I attended a 2 day meeting, and my roommate and I managed to get sick and throw up for several hours the first night. We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Denver, which was okay, but nothing special. My trip to Hawaii a few days later was MUCH better!
I had a nice travel year and I want to thank everyone on this board for their help with my travel planning. My trips:
Jan - Washinton D.C. - stayed at the Mayflower, was there mainly for business but also visited the new spy museum and my favorite parts of the Smithsonian.
June - Colorado and Santa Fe - great fun, great food, scenery and weather. Loved Bandelier on a bright sunny day.
August - Fort Lauderdale at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort. HOT! But I got a nice tan.
October - San Francisco - stayed at the Andrews hotel - OK hotel with great price for location and a great meal at Fino.
Next year - planning on Walt Disney World in Jan and Vegas and Zion in the spring. Keep you posted!
March - Philadelphia
April - New York City with family
June - Kure Beach/Wilmington, NC
June - Civil War sites around Richmond and drove Lee's Retreat route Petersburg to Appomattox
November - New York City alone
I actually traveled quite a bit, considering that we had a second child near the end of the summer.
In Feb. I went to Cancun on a business trip with my husband.
In April we took the boys to San Diego for a week.
In May we celebrated our anniversary in Arizona: in the Grand Canyon (Havasu Falls) and Sedona
In July we took the boys to Colorado and Utah.
In Nov. I did a solo trip to NYC and in Dec. I took my oldest son up to NYC to do the Christmas thing.
This was the most travel we've ever done in one year, courtesy of my husband and his FF mile account!
Let's see . . .

Los Angeles a few times for shopping
Yosemmite for fun
The year 2004 has some pretty big britches to fill, if it's going to live up to 2003!
From the Midwest:
January - rang in the New Year in Naples, Florida
March/April - spring break in the beautiful Florida panhandle town of Seaagrove Beach
July - a long beach weekend in Tampa, Florida
September - two glorious weeks in Italy, including Rome, the Amalfi Coast, and Umbria
December - closed out 2003 in Bangor, Maine
Travellyn, this is a great question! I hadn't realized we did so much in 2003. I was so focused on our first trip to Italy that I barely paid attention to all our other trips, and waddya know, but we made tracks in 2003!
Here's hoping that everyone has a great year of travel ahead of them!
I'd like to add an addendum to this question--do you folks hold full time jobs?
I work in the public school system, so it's a little hard to get away everytime we'd like to, although I will add this was our sparsest year yet for travel. Our travels included:
June/July - Providence, RI, Cape Cod, MA, coastal RI, NYC
July - Montreal/Quebec, CA
Dec - Manasota Key, Venice, Siesta Key, FL
Does it count if I ran, biked and walked over 2,000 miles????
Here's my list
January - Quebec City
May - Florence and Venice, Italy
September - Drove the California coast from LA to San Francisco stopping at Santa Barbara, San Simeon and Carmel.
I would recommend this vacation to everyone. It was perfect.
Hope my 2004 trips will be as good.

All the trips to Houston remind me what a terrible year it was for my friends there. On March 5th Tami's face sagged a bit. On March 6th she was diagnosed with a very aggressive brain tumor. I saw her 3 more times and she died in September. She was survived by her husband, a daughter 12 and a son 9. She would have been 40 in November. :'(
It really made me reconsider what's truly important. Make sure you get out there and see your friends and your family. You never know when you won't be able to again.
Sorry to be a bummer.
Indytravel.. that is just horrible.. I am sorry to hear about your friend.. that is a very serious reminder that life is precious.. and can turn on a dime... we all should get out there and see the places we want to see.. do the things we want to do and be with people we care about..life can be so short..
I am sorry for your loss.

I feel inadequate... I only spent a week divided between Little Rock and Hot Springs, AR in 2003.
*weep*
Sounds like the makings of a good New Year's resolution!
What a great idea! A bit like in school, "What did you do last summer?" Thanks for starting us off.
April: Massanutten (Virginia), where we were iced in for the week but with a fireplace, and watched the troops march into Baghdad and nonstop news on tv.
April: Long weekend in D.C., interesting anti-war rallies brought back old memories. Unfortunately caught in frenzy/traffic as Jessica Lynch was brought in.. D.C. is a very different place anymore, the careening motorcades of black Expeditions on "government" business all but running people down, etc. Creepy. The Smithsonian is always a treasure, however.
September: 2 week trip to Banff, Waterton Park, and Panorama in Canada plus Glacier Natl Park in MT. Started in Calgary and made a gigantic circle. Wildfires everywhere, horrible and devastating for those living there. Breathtaking scenery. The glaciers are indeed melting away, thanks to global warming.
October: Dallas TX for business
October/November: Raleigh, NC for business, side trip to Williamsburg.
New Years in Las Vegas (yes, we were one of the mass of revelers). Promised our son 10 years ago (during another trip to Vegas, but he was only 11 and miserable) that we would treat him to his 21st birthday in Las Vegas. A huge success, thanks to all those fodorites who helped to plan.
Also sprinkled throughout the year, business trips to Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa, plus places so rural in Florida that I think most people would not believe it if they have never been outside the tourist areas.
Finally, many trips to refill wine glass from wine we bought at those Virginia wineries in April..
For 2004, it's back to Massanutten (almost out of wine) and Williamsburg this spring, Tahoe/San Francisco for the fall.

Interesting to see all the replies.
For us, in January we went to East Liverpool, Ohio, for a funeral.
Early April, Charleston for the house and garden tour,
June, two weeks in Greece, one on the mainland and the other island hopping.
Labor Day to Red Top Mountain just outside Atlanta for our annual *whole* family get together--siblings, children, and now their children.
Thanksgiving and Christmas to my sister's in the country for our usual family holidays.
I forgot one--Washington, DC in late October. It was freezing, and my husband got a speeding ticket in MD, but we had a good time anyway.
Having relocated from a relatively large land-locked state where it takes 2 1/2 hours just to pass the borders to the Midwest-East Coast where cities are closer by, I took a fair share of roadtrips:
March: Pittsburgh and Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece in Pennsylvania's Laurel Highlands
July: Philadelphia, with one of the best downtowns I've seen
September: New York City -- all the touristy stuff in Manhattan
October: Columbus, OH - seductively quaint German Village and downtown
I spent the most time and money in Philly, and would love to go back to enjoy more of the museum of art. But I was completely enamored of Columbus' German Village, the oldest registered historic preservation district in the country, with its wonderful cottages and businesses. I'd want to live there.
For 2004, I'd like to explore the Midwest west of Cleveland - Chicago, Indianapolis, and Detroit. Yes, I am a city guy.

Aside from a few short ski trips and weekend getaways; Our main "vacation" was in Vancouver, BC. early October.

Probably one of my all-time favorites to date: The town of Ucluelet on Vancouver Island (Pacific Rim) did me in. Stayed at the Cabins, 3 story, rustic cabin on one of the inlets right in the middle of the rain forest which meets the coast. One word; unbelievable! Great walking paths, saw lots of wildlife, simply breath-taking!
The city of Vancouver was incredible as well, especially Stanley Park but getting away from everything was unforgetable.
We're off to Europe in a couple of weeks, so we'll see if cruising with my Mother-in-law (and husband, of course) will be as enjoyable.
Rosemary1, what is the name of the cabin you rented? This sounds like a great spot!
"So far this year Nags Head, and planning a trip to San Francisco, also Oshkosh WI for the huge EAA airshow (a fly in, and I should have my ticket by then). I was thinking of a trip to New Zealand with a friend but that may wait until next winter - way too much going on on the home front & currently there's no way I can take 2-3 weeks off work. dunno about the rest of the year, I'll play it by ear. Would like to visit some friends in Germany while they still live there... (peep!)"
funny, I wrote that barely 5 months ago and there are changes already.
I did go to San Francisco, didn't go to NZ with my friend but did go to France and Switzerland... not going to Oshkosh this year (just got back from SF, don't want to give my poor boss conniptions!) planning on Rome in the fall, possibly Las Vegas in December. There may be a weekend in Toronto squeezed in somewhere as well. plus other odds & ends - maybe Atlanta, likely Florida.

I'm jealous!! I definitely don't travel as much as everyone else but would certainly love to. Hopefully, when my husband and I retire and also finish paying off college loans, we will be able to travel more.
In 2003 we traveled to Prague and Poland in October, and my daughter's college graduation in Maine in May.
I missed the 2004 thread, but we are going to Costa Rica next week. In May we went to Nantucket.
Last summer - July/August 2003 - I was in paradise - I spent two glorious weeks in Hawaii, on Oahu, in Waikiki. I loved it! It was the first trip I'd made alone - the kids are grown now - and it was the BEST! I can't wait to get back - had hoped to get there again this year, but will have to settle for next Spring.

Mid-November 2003, I spent a week at the J.W. Marriott Desert Springs Resort. A storm blew in and hit Southern California hard. Los Angeles streets were under 4-5 feet of water and LAX was shut down for awhile. Despite the flashflood warnings in the Desert, the temperatures hung in the low 70's... 10-15 degrees warmer than home (Salinas, CA) so I couldn't complain. Spent one afternoon at the Living Desert Zoo and walked around under the sun one minute, a downpour the next. I bobbed around the pools and jacuzzis while it rained and had spa treatments the day before I left. Definitely memorable!
April/May - two weeks in Maui (I got married)

June - 5 days in Chicago for my sister's graduation from university
August - 5 days in Budapest - saw the Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix
August - 7 days in Venice, Italy

Next up - couple of nights in London and who knows what November and December will hold
