When to book inter-island flight?

Hello, we will need flight from Maui to Oahu during our Hawaiin vacation. How far in advance should I book our flight?? We are travelling May 2007. Should I book it now? or wait until a week or 2 before? Does anyone know if the prices are better if I book it more in advance? And finally, do you prefer one airline over another?
Thanks!
Linda

Here is a suggestion: When I booked our flights using FF miles on AA, I booked only flights to and from mainland with AA. I booked interisland flights individually. Then when AA changed my flight times on flights to Oahu, making my next flight to Maui impossible to make...I was responsible for rebooking flight and I would have had to pay change fee too had I not gotten a bit assurtive with AA to take responsibility for problem. Hope this makes sense.

If you are flexible on times and days, I thing waiting would be okay and would avoid the possible problems I encountered. And it seems like flight times get changed often, especially when you book far in advance. IMHO of course.

Hope this helps...

If you know what day you want to take the flight, and you find a fare under $50 one-way, you might as well book now. For the sake of comparison, my flight from BI to Oahu was $38 one-way plus tax. Hope that helps.

Should have included we flew on both Aloha and Hawaiian interisland and both were fine.

Also, they do have reduced fares from time to time. Sign up on each carriers sites for emails.

Last time I was there (2000) we purchased vouchers (do not think they have this anymore) and would call 2 days before we were going to another island to reserve our space. I think if you already know what times you want to go to the other island you should just get it. As far as price the time you are going (I will be there around the same time they are 44.80 with taxes each. I liked Hawaiian better than Aloha not sure what it's like right now. Hope this helps.

We purchased our flights on Hawaiian well in advance of our trip and ended up changing islands so we had to pay the change fee. The upside of booking early is that you can lock in those extra low prices, but of course the downside, is incurring the change fee. It's hard to say what you should do, but if I had to do it again, I'd probably wait until the departure date was closer before finalizing my interisland flights.

If you don't have some kind of phobia about propellar aircraft Island Air is an alternative. If you shop their website you can get deals quite often. The drawback is you 'll have to read their luggage restrictions if you will be taking any. Otherwise flight times are about the same as the jets but more scenic we thought just be sure to sit forward of the wing or to the rear.

We book when it hits a price point that we are happy with. On our last trip we used United miles. 5K for the equivalent of a round trip. We also booked a flight on Island Air. I was concerned about the weight of the luggage but we had saved money on the air fare so paying for the overage wouldn't have bothered me. They didn't even weigh it. We weren't over as a family but individual bags were over the limit. I liked the flight; lower altitude, more scenic, slower.
