When should we take the architectural tour boat ride? Which company?
My sister and I will be in Chicago Aug 7-11 and intend to take an architectural tour boat ride. Two questions we have about this activity are:
1) what is the best time of day to take the tour for picture taking and avoiding serious water glare / reflection for passengers?
2) which company would you recommend ? why? If I am reading the the online tourist information correctly there are 3 different cruise companies and I am uncertain as to which one to select.
Thanks,
Julie

I agree with the Chicago Architecture Foundation tour to learn about Chicago's history but I got to tell you, we enjoyed the Seadog more because they take you down the river giving SOME info (not as detailed as CAF)but then take you thru the locks out to Lake Michigan for a half hour of speed. It's also good to see Chicago from the Lake if you've not done that. http://www.seadogcruises.com/chicago/

http://www.architecture.org/tour_view.aspx?TourID=8. You should sign up ahead of time. You get it right on Michigan Ave

bwg, the CAF is at Navy Pier. The architecture tour on Michigan Ave is Wendella. The Chicago Architecture Foundation tour is: http://tinyurl.com/mlgy5d

It definitely doesn't leave from Navy Pier (maybe the one that's the combination river/lake tour does?) because I avoid NP like the plague, yet I have very happily taken the CAF river tour.

"ttt" means to the top. It brings the thread higher on the board with a recent post so more people notice it.
The CAF docks are on the SE corner of the Michigan Avenue bridge, not Navy Pier. The Wendella docks are at the NW corner of the bridge.

Sorry. Thanks for correcting me.
I was looking at this, which I thought was the Chicago Arch. Foundation: "Our tour boards at Navy Pier. The Chicago Architectural Cruise goes down the main branch of the Chicago River, up the north branch to the East Bank Club, and then south past Sears Tower to the old Post Office Building.
The cruise is led by a knowledgeable professional in the architecture field who will provide detailed descriptions of more than 40 buildings seen on the river cruise. If you need to book for 20 or more, please click here for our Chicago group tours."
I guess this is Chicago Architectural Cruise.

I liked the CAF tour. Note that the tours run RAIN or SHINE and they mean it. We boarded in a hail storm and were out in a thunderstorm and heavy rain. So that is the drawback of an advance reservation.
But, despite the fact that I was the most soaked I've ever been, it was fun.
