What's Your Poison and What's Your Favorite Travel Find?

I have no idea what my poison is tonight since DH has been taking care of the house and grocery shopping. I only know that he poured me a glass of some sort of white wine and whatever it is, it's fine with me after a VERY long week.

After many evening activities last weekend, from live bands to playing Rumikub out, to being in our knees in the ocean at midnight to scooter rides along the bay, we are just hanging on the patio tonight. We're having fun listening to "The Cure" and "The Femmes" while doing teen talk and bonding with DH's daughter. I just love how she opens up to us about various things and how we can all discuss pretty much anything under the sun....within age appropriateness, of course.

My question for tonight is "what is your all time favorite travel find?" From the mundane to the exotic. I can't really decide, so I've chosen "Statia Blue Beads" as my find. I found my first blue bead on travels here, but still enjoy finding them now that this is my home. Legend has it that if you find a blue bead on my island, you will return again and again.

Believe it or not, blue beads can now only be found here on our island and were originally used by the Dutch to purchase the island of Manhattan. They are also in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

So, what's your poison and what's your favorite travel find?

My poison tonight is my regular martini. I do try other things, honest, but I just keep going back to that dirty martini
My travel find is a black pearl from Moorea in French Polynisia. They told us it is the only place to buy an original. We visited where they are harvested and it was very interesting.
Statia, do you mind telling us which island you are on? It sounds wonderful. Hope you continue to have a good time with your step daughter!

Do I get the karma for being first? lol!

I am waiting for friends to arrive. The DH is flying in from a business trip, and the wife/kids/dogs are driving down from Seattle. I bought beer for the guys, but they won't partake until tomorrow night. They are headed out to mountain climb tonight.

Me, on the other hand...I need some poison tonight. Long week, but good. My mother was here visiting and we crammed a lot of stuff into the week. An emergency vet visit for our Golden, a gerbil funeral, shopping, surprise party, and a visit to Mt. St. Helens. We bought a bottle of ice wine this week and we all loved it(that and fudge were dinner one night!), so we actually went to the winery the other day and bought more. Good thing the winery is about 5 minutes from my house! Maybe that is a bad thing, lol! Anyway, was waiting for the friends to arrive, but I may have to start in early

Hmmm...my favorite find...I think that would be some tiles I purchased in Portugal. I keep them in the hutch for safe keeping for now and when we retire and are done moving, I want to use them for the kitchen walls. I bought them with that intention and so far I have not changed my mind.

Statia--Are the Femmes the same as the Violent Femmes from the 80's? It sounds like you are all having such a great time with your stepdaughter. It is great when kids feel so comfortable to open up. It sounds like she is a very lucky girl!

No poison, still finishing antibiotics etc.

Second part is hard. Emotionally, probably finding my second cousin in Germany, and bringing home a piece of the Berlin wall from that trip (1983).
Favorite memory of a travel find though: only trip we ever took as a family when I was a kid, my dad bought me my first "dance" dress-up dress (8th grade dance yet) at Macies. It was yellow spaghetti straps. It worked great too.

Hi everyone... Statia what fun you are having w/ your family! Love the "up to the knees in the ocean at midnight"! My kind of fun. Enjoy every minute.

At the moment enjoying a nice sauv blanc... refreshing on this "almost" record breaking 97* day in Chicagoland.
Whew!

Fav travel find would be the sunrise shell found on Ke Iki Beach, north shore O'ahu. A treasure.

Please tell us more about the "blue beads". What are they and where have you found yours?

I'm embarrassed to admit 3 different glasses of wine (so far). I've finished off the end of a bottle of Pinot Grigio, then the last of a bottle of rose, and have moved to my usual, La Playa Sauvignon Blanc (from Chile).

My favorite travel find? My husband

Statia please tell me more about the blue beads. I don't understand what they are.

cd, that black pearl sounds fabulous! I have some rare seashells I've found here, but never a pearl. Since you asked, here is the link to where I live.

mms, sounds like you had a busy week. Yes, it is "The Violent Femmes" we are listening to. Funny thing is that I played them for DH's daughter two years ago and she looked at me like I was nuts. This year she asked me where I had my Femmes stashed because all her friends listen to them. OMG - "Blister in the Sun" is making a comeback. Go figure.

JJ5 - What a find! Gotta hang on to that one.

makai1 - the blue beads were originally used as both slave trading beads and Dutch currency at various times here on the island. Legend has it that a slave had to have enough blue beads to go around another woman's waist in order to marry her. During emancipation the slaves went to the cliffs and threw all their blue beads into the ocean. Therefore, they are still found at high tide, or especially after hurricanes or high storms. We cherish the ones we have found and know the detriment that they and their owners have been thru at some point in history.

OMG Statia! When I asked about the VF's, it was Blister In The Sun that was going through my head, lol! Back in the early 80's, one of my sorority sisters was dating a guy in the band, so we went to a lot of private shows. Many memories!!! Wonder if I still have the cassette tape, lol! The bead story is really amazing.

mclaurie--lol! we had so many empty wine bottles from a party the other night and I was too embarrassed to put them out for recycling today.

i decided to not wait...having the ice wine now, before dinner and before friends...they will understand

Happy Friday, all. Mind if I pull up a stool and join in? ;-)

I should be opening up some turpentine, but ya can't drink that can you? I've been painting the powder room this afternoon. I have a new appreciation for painters. What a pain in the butt!

I think I'm in a Margarita mood but my husband is the Mix Master and is out mowing the yard so I have to settle for some cold water for a little while.

Favorite travel find? Definately the art I've collected on my trips. Each one is unique and reminds me of the places I've been. My current fave is from our honeymoon--it's a painting of Venice (well, Burano) and is very cool and colorful.

Statia, Enjoy the time w/your stepdaughter...and to everyone, Cheers!

My poison will be sake in a few hours, when we meet friends for sushi.

Part 2 is much more difficult. Can I have 3, please?

A big chunk of amber will a number of insects in it, purchased in Simojovel, Chiapas, Mexico.

A dazzling gold bracelet from Cambodia.

A brightly painted large cat, carved from one piece of wood and wildly painted, from Oaxaca.

What's my poison? Ummm... here at the office it's a glass of chardonnay. Probably zin when I get home.

JJ5, Your story reminded me of my greatest travel finds. As a kid, our family would often take trips to see relatives near Carson City, Nevada. We'd often go exploring near the home of one of my uncles, at the base of the mountains leading up to Lake Tahoe. On one such expedition, I found two treasures: a geode, and the head from a native american's arrow. Still have them both, tucked away in a drawer somewhere.

I finally found Lillet locally, so I'm enjoying some Lillet Rouge. Thank you, all of you who recommended it!

I have two favorite travel finds; the most recent is the greenstone earrings Mr. Pickle bought for me in Auckland last year. The other is a CD of songs from Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books that we bought in Mansfield, Missouri a few years ago. As we went into the gift shop, I was telling Mr. Pickle about a home school mom I had heard of who had made this recording. Lo and behold, her music was playing as we entered! We bought the CD and songbook, and listened to it as we drove away through the spring mist. It's a lovely, evocative reminder of that trip.

Oh Statia, I told you once before that I thought you would end up being a real good friend to your "special" daughter, and obviously you are! A special relationship for sure.

And the history of the blue beads is truly interesting (with a sad history). I had never heard about these beads.

I am having Chardonnay, how boring can one get, LOL. Next week will be a good vodka martini for sure.

Hey OWJ, don't get so dizzy and tired from that painting job that you start drinking the turpentine!!

mms, I too have had, after entertaining, so many bottles that I have only put a portion in the recycling bin as one time I filled it up completely and the racket when the garbage co. emptied could be heard through the whole court! Most embarresing. I wanted to run out and say "we had a lot of guest this past week", LOL.

LeeAnn, what a strange coincidence regarding the Little House CD. Isn't life full of surprises?

Statia, my most treasured items were not found by me on my trip but are items that were brought from Europe to the US by my grandparents. My treasures from my trips are works of arts.

Beachbum, your post made me smile.
My DH husband always kept congac (sp?) in his desk drawer and on rainy cold days he served it to everyone in the office, some topping a fresh cup of hot coffee. They somehow managed to close of for the day without any problems.

My one regret is that I did not buy any art when I was in Haiti. It was so striking. Live and learn.
A happy and healthy weekend to everyone. Enjoy every moment!

What a treat to meet little statia What fun that family is having!

Our poison tonight ~ a bottle of Bordeaux our daughter brought back from Brussels. It goes very well with chocolate while one contemplates what to start packing first.

I am stumped with the travel find.
Everywhere I go, I bring things home to remind me of that place.
So I am going with the find that belongs to my husband.
He bought it from a man in Paris in the 60's. The man told him this little statue was really petrified wood from an African tribe. My husband figured it was a good story, bought it because he liked it, not because of the story.
But back in NYC, he took it to a man at the Museum of Natural History and sure enough, the statue is really a Dogon and is old enough to have petrified.
That Yankee has a good eye!
