What's your favorite travel steal you've ever found?

Since I spend all my free time obsessing about travel anyway, I started a blog about my favorite travel bargains -- ones I've found on vacation and ones I've stumbled across while planning.

Since I get half my ideas from Fodorites anyway, I'd love it if you guys would give me suggestions -- cheap restaurants, free attractions, great (or kitschy) budget hotels, and so on.

If you want to check it out and give me opinions, the address is www.aviophile.com. I'd love to get opinions and ideas. (Please don't flame me -- this isn't an ad!! I seriously don't make a single penny off the website. It's just my fave distraction right now )

I didn't go to your website, but are Green Tortoise, Elderhostel and Cosmos tours on your list?

Faina -- nope, but I'll check 'em out! It's not a comprehensive list -- more like, when I see something really interesting (and wallet-friendly) mentioned on this board or in a magazine or on another travel website, I put up a post about it. Thanks for the suggestions

I have those exact Kino sandals from Key West in navy and in white. I love them, and get tons of compliments on them. They're about 13 years old and still look like new. It's worth a trip just to pick up some sandals . . . well, almost! (Mine were only $7.)

Oh, also, my co-worker didn't know about (gasp) the Kayak website. And maybe some newby needs to know that Southwest can have cheap fares, but you can't see this airline on Orbitz?

Too bad, "the budget queen" nickname is taken

Also, I think it's "Ding" you can download for Southwest airfare alerts. And travelzoo.com has some great sales.

Oh DING is great -- my friend got a $50 RT non-stop ticket from Baltimore to STL. I think with tax the entire thing came to $63 for the whole trip.

I thought my SJC to AUS (Austin, TX) in August 05 for $124.- an RT was really good. FYI, we never saw them that low after that.

Noise cancelling headphones. Worth a fortune when crying babies are onboard.

Thanks for all the info on Southwest and "DING." I'll definitely mention that one. And the noise-cancelling headphones are a great idea...I love "stuff."

BayouGal, I can't believe you have those sandals! I LOVE them.

Orbitz and Kayak have those notifying through e-mail feature too.

In Orbitz, you type in your desirable price, and IF it goes lower, you get an e-mail

Thanks for the info...I think I'll look around and do a post on all the travel alert features.

I guess it's called name your price. Another site that does that too is vapour2000.com . I think sites like hotwire and expedia, if they haven't started should be doing same soon. But name your price is for real, the only caveat there is that they tripple the other fees and taxed. But I enjoy using hotwire.com or vapour2000.com .
