Hi Karen: I don't live near Modesto but have driven thru a few times, to my knowledge not much there to keep children entertained. I would drive to Yosemite National Park, I think about two hours away.
Modesto provides access to Sonora Pass in the Stanislaus National Forest, the Mother Lode Country and the Big Oak Flat route to Yosemite. The Greek Food Festival is the fourth weekend of September. Miller's California Ranch has a small collection of motor vehicles and wagons and an old-fashioned store featuring antique and unusual bicyles. The Great Valley Museum of Natural History features exhibits about the Central Valley's ecosystems. St. Stan's Brewery offers tours and tastings. Blue Diamond Almond offers a videotape presentation about the growing and harvesting of almonds along with tasting room. McHenry Mansion is a Victorian House with period antiques and period artwork. McHenry Museum includes a schoolroom, blacksmith shop, dentist's office and more. There is some educational value to all of these. If you are like me, I would drive on to Yosemite. However, if there are other reasons to stay in Modesto, checkout some of the above. They could be interesting and you will have a chance to see the area and meet the people. The locals will know where they all are located. Your children are not too young to learn about the history and agriculture of Califonia. Also the ecosystem of the central valley affects the entire state. The weather should be warm to stay in a place with a pool for the children. The best choice might be the Holiday Inn Express for around $70 including a Continental Breakfast. Upscale a bit you might try the Mallard's Inn for around $92/night on nice landscaped grounds. Alway ask for special or AAA rate.
