What's the 14th Street area like?

I've found a good deal at the new Mason and Rook hotel in Washington, D.C. but don't know anything about its neighborhood. Please help!

It's a Kimpton hotel. Newly renovated (as of earlier this year).

Neighborhood is a mix of residential, embassies and hotels. It's the start of the the 14th Street/Logan Circle corridor of restaurants, a very popular area.

Are you STILL looking for a hotel for October?

Yes, but I have 5 bookings at this point of which M&R seems to be the prize winner. Others are The District by Hilton Club, the Churchill, the Fairfax, and State Plaza.

I am obsessed with this hotel search, in case you can't tell. Something of a hobby, I suppose.

The M&R reviews I've read have been mostly glowing, the less good ones from very early on in the renovation.

I recall you saying this trip is something of a special occasion and that you have some very specific criteria for the room. Is it the latter that makes you interested in the State Plaza? It's a perfectly fine hotel but I'm not sure I'd call it a special occasion place.

M&R is equidistant between Dupont Circle (red) and McPherson Square (blue/silver/orange) metro stations. 14th Street is on the Adams Morgan Circulator line as well as the 52,53 & 54 bus lines. (http://www.wmata.com/bus/timetables/dc/52-54.pdf)

That's great information, obxgirl--thanks.

Yes, late anniversary celebration (54 years!!!). I suppose what I want in a room/suite is basically what we have at home. I like the M&R suite because it has both a tub and a shower, not to mention a separate powder room.

State Plaza rooms just looked nice and big, good location, but I think it will go off the list. M&R has everything I wanted except, of course, for the price.

I really like that neighborhood for dining and bar hopping, and it's very near a good Whole Foods, and what is possibly my favorite restaurant (Le Diplomate), and my favorite gelateria

Maybe not wildly convenient to the Metro--a 10 minute walk, though, not bad by any means. And the bus is easy to navigate.

I would live in that neighborhood if I could, although it's funny how VERY different it used to be!

Hard to beat a neighborhood that has a French restaurant and a great gelateria! Decision made.

My husband was very happy to see a great Reuben on the menu at Ted's Bulletin, and I look forward to the grilled cheese sandwich. We're not big breakfast eaters; so I'll be looking for cafés with good French pastries.

I am also lusting after the skate on the menu of Le Diplomate, not to mention just about everything else there. Now I can start making restaurant plans at long last.

I stayed at the Mason and Rook last week for three nights on a business trip. They did a lovely job with the remodel. I'm a big fan of Kimpton hotels and I've stayed at most of their hotels in DC, but this one might be my favorite. Enjoy your trip!

Underhill, around the corner from M&R at 14th and P is Dolcezza, serving some of DCs best coffee, a small but high quality selection of pastries as well as lovely gelato.

You will want a booking at Le Diplomate even on a weekday. They take reservations 30 days out on Open Table, possibly farther out if you call direct.

Will do. I'm really excited by the number of restaurants that are close by.

obxgirl, I'm sure you're sick of this by now, but I wanted to thank you again for your help and to tell you that I've actually settled on a hotel: the Kimpton Palomar, which has a very nice 20% off deal for a spa suite. Shower and tub! Newly renovated. Sounds ideal.

Another good choice, Underhill. I'm following you until the end .

Other than the State Plaza which doesn't get Special Occasion points you've only considered good hotels.

I've stayed in those suites at the Palomar (pre-reno) and they are spacious and fun.

Good to know. The ambience seems perhaps more suited to an Older Couple than the M&R.

Mason & Rook just offered to get a featherbed topper for the mattress in the suite we're considering; now I hate to switch to the Palomar! But it seems to have more of what we're looking for.

Underhill, I've stayed at a Palomar spa suite in Philadelphia and love, love, love them but I want to warn you that the spa tubs aren't the easiest to get into and if you have any mobility issues, you might find it difficult. They're big enough for two and deep enough to sit in on a bench but you have to step up and then down into them. Just an FYI. Happy anniversary!

The spa suite has a stand-up shower as well as tub; so one for me, one for my husband. Good to know about the spa tub, though--he'll love it.
