What's new and hot in New York theaters?
We will be going to New York for a few days in December.
My question is for someone who lives in New York, and knows and love theater life.
What's new and hot on and off Broadway now days (musicals, plays, etc)?
As it relates to Broadway, we are only interested in newer stuff, because most of the older stuff we have seen previously in either in NY, London or Chicago.
We live in Chicago, so most of what comes to Chicago as pre-Broadway engagement or on tour we see.

Forget about Hamilton, unless you want to pay a few hundred dollars apiece for premium seats. Otherwise, it's sold out for months.
If you haven't seen it yet, get tickets for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. It's wonderful

Oooh! I just heard about Hamilton from my girlfriend as well! I did not look yet but figured it would be sold out.

I liked the Curious Incident too.
I'm going to see Arthur Miller's View from The Bridge on Wednesday. It's a Young Vic transfer from London and was very well reviewed there. We're planning to see quite a bit of theatre and I''ll probably do and ongoing trip report so we may have some more ideas by December
The Flick which won the Pulitzer seems to be something you love or hate. Friends who see a lot of theatre o said to give it a miss, they gave Hand to God a thumbs up.
Unfortunately you could currently spend hundreds of dollars for a less than premium seat to Hamilton! Apart from the daily lottery it's all secondary market tickets right through Dec.
Another show that looks interesting to me is the Spring Awakening revival. I'm not much of a musical theatre fan but I saw it when it first came out some years ago and it is very good. This version stars Marlee Matlin combines deaf and hearing actors and sounds innovative. I find the NYT theatre reviews valuable, as much for the online comments which can be very helpful in giving you a sense of the broader reception for the show.
There are several people on the board, based in NY who go to a lot more NY theatre than me, hopefully one of them, or Doug from Fodors might chime in...

Spend what the market requires for Hamilton. We got good seats from StubHub for 50% over face value and would have paid more. It is one of the 3 best musicals I have ever seen. ( Lion King and Bring in da Noise )
I was unmoved by curious incident but loved the outsized humor of Hand to God. Not for the squeamish.

Unfortunately, it's far too late for December tickets to anything new and hot. However, it's not at all too late if you want to see something good and (possibly) new. The King and I is just wonderful; not new, but excellent, and tickets are widely available. Hand to God is closing shortly, as is the Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder. Other really good long-playing hits include Beautiful: The Carole King Story, Fun Home, and Something Rotten.
Sylvia got good reviews and seems a real crowd-pleaser. And I enjoyed Aladdin.
Hamilton is the hottest ticket on Broadway, and after 60 Minutes last night, I doubt you can get even a 50% over list ticket. They're selling seats for Fall 2016!
There's a very well received off-Broadway show called "The Humans". I'm seeing it on Friday, and I've loved the writer's other work, so I'm expecting great things. There was also a review of another great off-Broadway play today called "Hir".
I'm seeing Allegiance in a couple of weeks. It got a mixed review in the Times today, but for me it's a must-see.
My real advice is this: The week after Thanksgiving is typically one of the busiest of the entire fall season in New York. If you want to see anything other than Phantom or Chicago, you need to buy tickets now, as in today. And make your restaurant reservations, too, if you want to eat in any decent restaurant.

Just musicals or plays too? (yes, I'd agree about seeing Curious Incident -- it's SO good. For "new and hot" I'd include King Charles III! Some tickets should be available during December if you hurry.
I happen to love Sylvia, but the Matthew Broderick haters don't agree -- even though this role is perfect for his almost monotone laid back acting style.
And also with mixed reviews, if you love tap dancing jammed 30's style musicals -- or rather spoofs of them -- Dames at Sea is a don't miss. I guarantee you won't stop smiling.

I agree with the Curious Incident recommendations, you made a good choice.
Most of the Broadway shows will come on tour to Chicago (or have already been there)so I'm thinking about some you might not be able to see outside of NY.

Thank you so much, everyone! This was a last minute decision to go, so we did not get time to plan for something the newest and the hottest like Hamilton. We will be there during December 10 - 13 weekend, so should be able to get tickets for something from the above recommended. I am inclined to check out The Curious..., and Hand to God. I think will take a look in seeing Allegiance or View from the Bridge. A lot of choices! Thank you so much again for your help!

Most Broadway show tickets are sold through Telecharge. You don't really have any choice about buying tickets online. Every play has an official sales agent, and the fees are ridiculous, as they are for all online ticket sales. Online discounts are not uncommon, but you will be put through to the official ticket seller to actually purchase the seats.
Having said that, Telecharge does a good job of showing you where you'll be sitting and offering a clear idea of where available tickets are located.

There are discounts available at both playbill.com and broadwaybox.com for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. It's playing in a small theater, so you can see from just about anywhere. And, as several of us recommend, that show is best seen from the mezzanine.
