Looking for a day trip from Kansas City, something fun but not expensive.

Lawrence KS, HOme to Kansas University is a fun place to visit. The KU campus is gorgeous ( very hilly and wonderful architecture) and there is actually a fabulous history/Science Museum there and art museum. There are fun boutiques and great restaurants in a small town atmosphere.

We really like Omaha, Ne. Our daughter moved there, first for an internship, then for a job. We've visited there twice now. They have a wonderful art museum and the Old Market has good dining and shopping options. We had terrific pizza at Pitch in the Dundee area of town last month.

Though we haven't made it there yet, the zoo and botanical gardens get rave reviews and there seems to always be something going on in town. Next month it's the Maha indie music festival. Plus, it's only 3 hours away. Definitely driveable, but if you want to spend the night, we've had good luck getting decent, cheap rooms on priceline.

Omaha is nice, but due to the flooding it's more than a day trip

Hutchinson, Kansas is a possibility. There's the Cosmosphere (www.cosmo.org) and/or The Salt Museum: http://www.undergroundmuseum.org/index.php
