What to wear in New York this weekend

I would suggest light clothing as well, but it doesn't have to be black! We were in NYC last month and it was humid and sticky. Lots of capris, skirts, tank tops and flat ballet shoes on the streets.
Also take a sweater as the subway cars, restaurants, shops, etc. are air conditioned and can be rather cool.

Regardless of the fabric, dark colored clothing will absorb more radiant energy from the sun than light colored clothing will, and will then be hotter than light colored clothing would be.
Still, it's a personal choice what color to wear. I choose lighter colors on hot, sunny days, even in cities, even in New York City. My clothes don't show dirt because I don't find they get significant dirt on them to show.

All black?? Are you kidding?? In this heat??
If you are going to wear black, make sure the clothing is skimpy or you will roast.
For sightseeing, wear shorts, t-shirt, trainers. No one dresses up in August in Manhattan, it is too damn hot.
Dinner? Where are you eating? Does the restaurant have a dress code? If not, wear something that you wouldn't be embarrassed to be seen in.
It is too damn hot to dress up!!!

It is supposed to be blazing hot in NYC all week, and according to the forecast cool down into the 80's on Friday, so weekend could be fab.
As for your what to wear question, I would wear clothes that suit your personality but can be adjusted for hot outdoor conditions and cold indoor air conditioning.
I think the main thing that will dictate how fancy you need to be dressed will be your dinner restaurant selections. Everything else can be casual.

Actually this coming weekend is supposed to be cooler. they're now saying highs of 80 to 85. Nevertheless - probably humid and uncomfortable if you're outside a lot and doing much walking.
Suggest you go for whatever you have that is lightest - colors and fabric (thin cottons, linen or silks). Avoid anything heavey like jeans or heavy, hot shoes - or anything too bare - which will just toast you in the sun. (There's a reason people that live in the desert wear light-colored, long, loose clothing.)
If the dinner is in a more upscale place - and for the shows - try to do business casual at least. I know I always enjoy things more - they feel more special - if I know I'm well-dressed.

Thanks all, for the humor as well as the info..both shows are in the afternoon, no fancy restaurants..just good eats...(Any suggestions?) Don't want to be too scheduled...Church at St. Pat's Cathedral...it's HOT here in Michigan...hate to have to stay inside..looking forward to cooler weather for the weekend..we are arriving Sat AM...leaving Tuesday...

sumreknot- I'm guessing you're male? light dress khakis, nice bright colored cotton/linen/silk dress shirt you can roll your sleeves up/down, comfortable walking shoes, and your fav (tasteful) tie stuck in a pocket or bag
And you never HAVE to stay inside- just choose when you go outside

hmmmm...no I am female, with a loving (mostly) hubby and 3 grown children...wonder why you thought otherwise...oh and btw...4 darling grandbabies..well, they're not so "babies" anymore..at least not the 3 boys...but the little darling girl just turned 15 mos..off the topic or what???!!! Thanks!

So....my suggestion doesn't really change- light khaki/linen skirt/pants/capris with pretty, colorful cotton/silk/linen blouse....i par of comfy sandals/walking shoes, and one pair of comfy but stylish sandals. Maybe your "little black dress"? And in place of tie, favorite jewelry (preferably dress watch and simple silver/gold). Maybe a light jacket or shawl if you get cold easily (A/C)

It's been steaming in Manhattan. Dress for comfort, especially on the weekend. You'll see absolutely every type of get up in the theater. 
One of my favorite stories about dressing for the theater, told by another poster on another travel board.
"I saw "Spelling Bee" this weekend. In the show, they pick four people out of the audience to spell words just like in a real Spelling Bee. As they come up to the mic, they make up some fake "biography" about the person.
One young woman was dressed in exercise tank top (bra showing), low-slung capri sweat pants and sneakers, sans socks.
The "Vice Principal" introduced her: " This young lady has a style all her own! When her mother told her to wear something nice, she replied, "I'm going to wear whatever I want! It's a spelling bee, Mom, not a Broadway show!!" "
The audience lost it!
Bottom line, don't dress for the beach to go to the theater.
