What to see in western Nebraska

What to see in western Nebraska
We will be traveling through western Nebraska two days in July. Is Cabela's worth stoping at? What else should we be sure to stop and see or do? Any recommended restaurants in Sidney?

I'll be honest, there isn't much in Western Nebraska. Which is why I don't live there anymore.
Cabela's is a pretty good place to look around. Moreso if you're outdoorsy, and good for kids. There are several really small museums about pioneer life in various towns, but I don't know of one worth stopping for. Cabela's in near the interstate, and right in that area are lots of fast food places and gas stations. The only one I really look forward to stopping at is a place called Runza, which makes these weird little sandwiches called, runzas, duh. But I really like their hamburgers. Other than that I don't know of much in Sidney. It's a very small town, so you might find a diner.
If you have the time to travel the only places that might be of more interest are Lake McConaughey to the East, especially if you like camping and fishing. And then Scottsbluff, to the Northwest of Sidney. Not a big city but with more things to do.
It'll be HOT and stormy in July so be prepared.

What has been written sure does not describe the western Nebraska that I know. Ringed neck pheasant hunting. Deer and antelope hunting. Sand Hill Cranes along the Platte River. Scottsbluff monument. An hour or two away from Cheyenne Fontier Days. Fort Robinson History museum. Fort Sidney. Sure there is the original Cabela's store. Fishing in lake Ogallala. Arrow head hunting. Rise early in the morning for a day of skying in the Rockies. Three hours from Denver and some wonderful museums. A couple of hours south of mount Rushmore.
Western Nebraska is a wide beautiful oasis that is worth discovering and taking more than a day to know. The Mormon Trail and the Pony Express passed through here. The Union Pacific Railroad opened the west.
Buffalo Bill's Ranch near North Platte is worth the visit.

How could I let these responses stand for all time? Very discouraging to read this when I know better. A walk along the road in the country yields a still calmness you will find nowhere else. You can hear a car approach from two miles away. The train whistle from ten miles away.
The birds singing and flying around nervously as they are very aware you are amongt them.
Vistas of the plains... you can see for 20 miles or more. You can watch the storm clouds build as see a 100 mile storm system.
The things Western Nebraska has is not many of you. You are too busy to enjoy the nature presented.

I left Alliance @ 9pm once, and drove straight through to Grand Island, taking highways instead of the interstate.
That was my only experience with western Nebraska. (although, somehow, on Easter Sunday, I did manage to get from Mount Rushmore to Alliance in the daylight - can't remember much of that either)
