The Arch of course is a must see. There is a great film on the building of the Arch that you must see, as well as a wonderful museum beneath the Arch depicting the Lewis & Clark voyage and other history. The St. Louis Zoo is very good. The Science Museum I hear is excellent (was just being finished in '91 the last time we were there - didn't see it myself.) A tour of the Anheiser/Busch (sp?) is interesting as well if you like that sort of thing.

An absolute must is the Cathedral with all of the mosaic work. I don't remember the name of it but it is spectacular. All of the tour busses stop at it. There are 2 cathedrals in St. Louis. Just mention the mosaics and the natives will know what you are referring to.
The Arch is very interesting but we found the trip up to the top of the arch a major disappointment.

There is also the Missouri Botanical Gardens with exhibits both inside and out. In the summer the herb garden is nicely aromatic
The art museum is small but good. There is also in the same park, I think it's Forest Park?] a conservatory called the Jewel Box.
Close to downtown is the old train station, now a Hyatt Hotel anfd a mall... both the lobby of the hotel and the mall are worth seeing.

Being from st. louis, i know of several things to do around the area if you only have one day you could start out with the arch, pop your head into the old cathedral on the arch grounds (the new cathedral is the place with the mosaics-i think?-it's located in the central west end), hop on the metro link to union station and eat lunch. Goto Forest Park, which houses the art museum, st. louis zoo (one of the nation's top zoos), the science museum which is a lot of fun for the kids, and much more--don't forget all of these are free! The botanical gardens can be beautiful depending on the time of the year, but I don't think there is a convenient metro link stop for that one. If you happen to go around the fourth of july-make your hotel reservations early because the st. louis fair (formally vp fair) will be going on for 3 days. this is always fun with at least 2 top name concerts a day, a great air show, and fireworks among other things
my recomendation is to use the metro link-it's still clean and only a buck and extends from the arch to the airport-i wouldn't take it over the river to the east side (east st. louis, ill) there is not much tourism there! Sorry, east side!
