My first day in New York will be Veteran's Day and as I have never visited the US on a holiday I need to know if many things are closed for the day. I am with my elderly mother and she wants to do a city tour or a harbour tour that day.

Trip Ideas
Besides a parade and if you are sexpecting mail, it will be like every other day.
Other than governmental offices, the post office, banks and some office type businesses just about everything else in NYC will be "open" and fully operating. You'll have no difficulty (other than encountering a few more people since they may be "off from work") doing a city and/or harbour tour on that day. FYI - Veteran's Day is not a particularily "important" holiday.
This is not a major holiday here and everything will be open and operating on regular hours. There will be a parade but it will be minor compared to our major parades (St. Patrick's Day, Thanksgiving, Puerto Rican Day, Columbus Day etc).
Only federal employees and bank employees have the day off - it;s a regular working day for all other stores and businesses.
