What to do with 10 days in California?
My girlfriend and I will be spending 10 days in California in July. We arrive in La and leave from San Fransisco. We plant to hire a car and visit Yosemite. We would be interested to hear suggestions of other places to visit.

If you have time, take US Highway 1 North of San Francisco. It is a wild drive. You're so close to the edge, one false move and you'd be in the sea! Of course with all the rain they've been having, the road may be in the sea right now! After that, check out Point Reyes National Seashore, with its lighthouse. Unbelieveable scenery.
I drove up the coast several years ago from San Diego to Frisco. So much to do, so little time.

Consider a side trip to the Mother Lode area, perhaps in conjunction with a trip to Yosemite. The string of small towns along Highway 49 includes some really interesting towns, such as Sonora, Angeles Camp, San Andreas, Jackson, Sutter Creek and Grass Valley/Nevada City. July can be hot, so get an air-conditioned car. A side trip to Columbia State Park is well worth it. The antique shops are fun, as well as museums and gold-panning demonstrations. Another town on 49 is Coloma, the site of the gold discovery along the American River.

Rob--you MUST travel north of San Francisco on Hwy. 1--go to Mendocino (great quaint fishing town), also go to the Redwoods--they are fantastic. Mendocino is probably about 4 hrs. north of S.F. Then another 4 hours north are the Redwoods and another great little town called Trinidad Bay. There's a great little restaurant right on the Bay. Also, a great restaurant in the the little town of Elk. Back to Trinidad: there is a park right on the ocean called Patrick's Point--we were only going to spend an hour and we spent half a day on the trails and sitting on the rocks. We also went to Napa--you have to eat at the Auberge du Soleil (pricey, but very romantic and beautiful) That restaurant is in the town of Rutherford (in the Napa area). The vineyards and valley is beautiful. Go to the Hess winery (in Napa). S.F. is gorgeous--do Chinatown, take a boat ride, eat, eat, eat, walk, walk, walk. Cheap: R&G Lounge right in Chinatown--mostly Asian families eating there--good sign. Expensive: Aqua in the financial district. Yosemite is gorgeous--go to Glacier Point and if you have time, go to the North side of the Park and hike off of the Tioga Pass road. This part of the park is less crowded, but beautiful. Feel free to e-mail me if you want any more info--I love California!! Have fun--Kristin [email protected]
