If you are at all into art museums the McNay and SA Museum of Art are great. Both are accessible by short taxi ride, even bus or for SAMA river taxi. If you are the spa type go for something at Mokara (previously Watermark) hotel, on the Riverwalk which conistently gets top marks.

I'll have to check them out. The hotel offers in/out parking so I'll likely be the lazy Texan and drive myself to avoid too much heat.

A tour of one or more of the missions would be interesting. I'd recommend starting with the San Jose mission where the Visitor Center is located and they offer a movie about the Indian and Spanish influences. Guided tours are given by the National Park Service at this mission.

If you have a car it should be a piece of cake. Parking is easy and, I believe, free at both SAMA and the McNay. From downtown you would just head north on Broadway, turn left on Jones to get to SAMA down a couple blocks on the right. To reach the McNay, get back on Broadway going north, continue until Austin Highway where you turn right. The McNay is at on the left at the next major intersection, North New Braunfels Avenue. If you decide to do both in one day there area couple good places for lunch in between the two, or the cafe at SAMA is actually not bad.

If you have a car I would second traveler's suggestions to go to the National Park missions; they make quite a contrast with the Alamo (which is not to be missed of course, either).

The only Spanish aqueduct still in use in the United States is near Mission Espada and makes a great short sidetrip.

The second oldest public park in the US, after Boston's Commons, is San Pedro Springs.

And the historic district of King William has some houses to tour.

And have you been to the Institute of Texan Cultures?

And yes, I've done all the above with companions, but there's no reason why you can't enjoy them alone if your husband doesn't have time.

Thank you for all of the suggestions. I've been to two of the missions and really enjoyed the Mariachi Mass a few years ago. I've done the segway tour through the historic district but have never specifically visited any of the homes.

The Institute of Texan Cultures is great and within walking distance of the Riverwalk. If you have a car, take drive out to the hill country and visit Gruene. It's a little town with lots of interesting shops and the Gristmill, a fun place to eat.

Sue54- Such a wonderful bad influence you are on me! There are some really fantastic shops there! I love a jewelry maker named Charlie Brown who sells his handmade copper jewelry in one of the shops there. His items are well priced and unusual in design.

mhag, if I am around, I'd love to meet you for lunch in New Braunfels (but at Huisache Grill, not eating outside in the Texas heat!) or come meet you in downtown SA. It would be a diversion for a day, anyway.

I just did SA by myself on Thursday and will go again next Thursday. Walked from San Fernando Cathedral, then Spanish Gov Mansion, Marti's to shop, Casa Navarro and Market Square but especially the Alameda Theater Musuem.

Thursday I will go to La Villita but my main goal of the trip is to go to Villa Finale. Only 12 people at designated times, so reservations are needed. Then tour the King William area.
