What species is Arthur?

Taking a housegift to a young couple in Chicago. Want to take a gift to their almost 4 year old as well. Someone at work suggested Arthur doll or book or Barney. I know Barney is a purple dinosaur but I find Arthur cuter. Can anyone tell me if he's a mouse, a bear, a dog--what is he? His ears look like bear, but his nose is hard to figure. Sounds like a silly question, but I would appreciate knowing.

He's an aardvark.

Why do I store so much useless info in my brain?

Cindy, Thanks! An Aarvark with glasses--what a hoot. Is he a good choice for this age group?

My kids 7 & 11 still love Arthur. When they were 3 & 8 they insisted I pledge to PBS to get the Arthur and DW dolls. We still have them!

My almost 4 year old daughter LOVES Arthur. I'd go with him over Barney in a second!

If you can't find something good in Arthur products, consider "Dragon Tales." Very popular with 3-4 year olds.

Jsut a suggestion--instead of a doll, why not get a couple of video tapes, or some of the books on tape? Not only will the child love them, it will be new enough to keep him or her occupied giving the parents some time to visit with you! My 8-year-old has loved Arthur for years. The books are tape are esp. great on car trips and plane rides!

Boy, am I out of it! Thanks for all the suggestions. Would it be better to get this little one cassette tapes of Arthur to play on trips in the car or video tapes to play at home or books about him? It seems that I have found something really popular. Now I worry that this little girl might already have all the Arthur things I might bring. What a dilemma! BTW, while I find Arthur a credible aardvark, his sister BW really doesn't look like one at all---at least to my way of picturing an aardvark. What fun. The world of children and cartoons!

Well I guess I was preoccupied when I signed in under your name sallymae! I suggested the videos &/or tapes. Of the two, the tapes might be a better choice since they can go anywhere with a tape recorder (with headphones so it doesn't drive the adults crazy). Most of the Arthur tapes also come with a book that you can follow along while listening to the tape. I'd suggest checking Amazon.com to see what they have.

Just thought I'd mention, we have a friend named Ernie and when he came to visit one time he brought our daughter a Tickle-Me-Ernie doll. That was a big hit. She thought it was funny that big Ernie brought her "Little Ernie" and she still remembers (big) Ernie because of it. It's nice if there's some sort of connection.

My 3 year old likes Arthur, Blues Clues and Clifford the Red Dog. At this age she doesn't care for Barney or Elmo much anymore.
