What section of Maui to stay?
Planning a trip to Maui in July. I know very little about the island. What section of Maui is the nicest? I want an area that is upscale, relaxing. Will weather be a factor? I understand some parts of the idland might get more rain than others--true? (I want to avoid rain!) Also, any recommendations for a resort/hotel or condotel? Again, luxury and relaxing is the key. Thanks!

The two main areas that have the majority of hotels & condos are:
Lahaina/Kaanapali and Kihei/Wailea/Makena
Of those two areas, Kaanapali & Wailea are the more upscale.
In July you shouldn't have to worry about rain. It may rain some in the mountains or on the Hana side of the island. But not much rain anywher else in July.
Lots of info:

For luxury and relaxation, I think you might enjoy Wailea. The Four Seasons is nice. Wailea is definately upscale.
The most touristy area is Kaanapali and Lahaina. Just a titch North of that is the Ritz Carlton (Kapalua) which might also suit you.
We prefer the beaches in Wailea.

We chose Wailea when we were in Maui...unbelievably fantastic! We were there in early April and never saw a drop of rain (except on our day trip to Hana). We could watch the whales from our hotel balcony or restaurant. Please try to avoid Lahaina...it's way too noisy and touristy. We never made it up to the Kanapali or Kapalua areas so I cannot comment on them. Hawaii is magical...enjoy!

Wailea for sure...but if it's your first time to Maui..do drive in to Lahaina for the evening..not that far of a drive from the Wailea area. 4 Seasons is always scrumtous, the Grand Wailea was just acquired by the Hilton chain, the Kea Lani (next door to the Grand Wailea) is our overall favorite. It's a Fairmont property...all the rooms are glorious suites. It tops our well-traveled list for that area...even though the Grand Wailea has a wonderful water slide and wins the pool award. If you can afford the extra $$$, the Kea Lani has beachside cabana rooms. OMG...dip pools, wonderful!!!!
