What is your favorite area of New York City?
My wife and I are planning to spend a few days in NYC in late March/early April. We have stayed in several different areas in Manhattan, but are always looking for new experiences. Please share your favorite area of the city.
Thanks,
Baba4

i loved the Upper West Side...we stayed there (at The Excelsior) for 4nights during our stay before moving to Midtown for a week.
UWS has beautiful streets to explore, true locals, the park nearby, great restaurants!
i also loved The Village and Union Sq/Gramercy Park area

Are you looking for a favorite place to live in, a place to stay in, a place to stroll around looking at buildings, a place to eat? These may all be different areas of the city.
You said you've stayed in different areas--which ones? Which did you like or dislike and why? More useful suggestions will come with filling in those pieces of information

We're looking for a place to stay in, hopefully with an interesting area around it. We can subway or walk to restaurants, so that's not an issue. We usually stay on the upper west side, but we have also stayed midtown. We're looking for something different this time, possibly Greenwich Village, or ????

It changes all the time. If I could stay anywhere, I would probably choose the West Village for its picturesque streets. It also still has pretty good subway connections (which are a bit more lacking in another favorite area: Tribeca). The East Village has my heart for a place to live, but if I were a tourist visiting, I would probably just come over to eat many of my meals, and stay further West. Ditto regarding the Lower East Side.
If you've been here a fair amount and haven't really explored Brooklyn yet, well... maybe now's the time! We posted a link to a great Martha Stewart show on the burough recently: http://www.hitherandthither.net/2009...nter-home.html. She visits my favorite restaurants--Diner and Marlow & Sons.

There aren't a lot of hotel options in the village. Apart from the W Union Square which is pricey, the wshotel.com and the Cooper Square in the east village (somewhat controversial new hotel) there aren't a lot of choices. But there are some nice b & b's if that's a possibility. west-eleventh.com , abingdonguesthouse.com
If you want to be downtown, there are some decent choices in Soho and the Lower East Side. Hotel on Rivington (les) is sometimes well priced on quikbook.com Hampton Inn & Four Points Sheraton both opened in Soho. While the rooms aren't that large, they're the first decent, moderately priced options in the area.

I know it's not for everyone, but when we go, it's for a theater weekend, so we prefer to stay around Times Square so we can walk to theaters, back to the hotel for a break between a matinee and dinner or between going to TKTS and a matinee.

If you want to see how the (affluent) locals live check out the Hotel Wales in Carnegie Hill
(92nd and Madison). It's convenient for all the museums on Fifth Avenue and there's good bus transporation down Fifth and up Madison. If you're into a leisurely trip it could be fun.... otherwise it'd be a bummer -

I go to New York about once a year, and whenever I have free time, I head to West Greenwich Village for the aforesaid picturesque streets and East Greenwich Village for ambience. I was surprised a year ago to discover that I kind of liked the energy around Alphabet City...

You might want to check the 2010 dates for the Tribeca ArtWalk (used to be called that but now it is called TOAST- Tribeca Open Artist Studio Tour) as it happens in April. We have gone a few times for that weekend and love it, and are going again this year. Atrists (painters, sculptors, photographers, multi-media) open their studios (which often means their home spaces if they work there) and you walk from one to another on your own and meet the artists, have wine and cheese or whatever they serve, and browse their art. It is a fascinating way to get close to some art and meet the artists.
Generally my favorite area to stay in is Soho as I love the proximity to all parts of the village, the good inexpensive restaurants, the shops, street vendors, galleries, and I always go to the NYC Market in Soho (formerly the Young Designers Market, great weekend event, see link below). But I love staying in Tribeca for TOAST.

Private apartment rentals are often scams and not at all advised. 55th st. is NOT the lower east side but rather the east side or midtown east and very very different. NYC is very safe but it's NOT safe to rent an apartment over the internet from people you don't know. There are plenty of apartment/hotels if you need a kitchen. You would be much better to start your own post here with your budget for hotel and the kind of place you'd like.

NYC is the safest large city in America. 9Not only that but the 17th precinct is one of the safest in the city.
