What is the best car for traveling?

Now that more people are taking to the roads instead of the skies, what is the most comfortable and best vehicle for those long road trips? Winnebago's don't count!

Hands down a conversion van with tv/vcr and a bed that folds down in the back.

Winnebago's do count! You have everything you would ever want! Bathroom, bed, refrigerator, freezer, microwave, oven, stove, table, chairs. It's the only way I like to go on road trips.

My second choice would be an SUV or Mini Van so you sit like in a chair. When you sit low for a long period of time I think it's hard on your body and you get tired and sore.

While the Ferrari is without a doubt a gorgeous car, it is horrible for long trips. Like most sportscars, the seats are too stiff, and the cup holders are very flimsy.

I LOVE my new car and it is without a doubt the most comfortable one I've driven in yet. It's the volvo cross country wagon. Those seats are incredibly comfortable, and I don't know what it's insulated with, but when all the windows are rolled up you can't hear a peep. Very quiet. Plus, it gets much better gas mileage than my old SUV. Can't wait to take it on our trip down south Sunday.

And yes, we got the tv/vcr. Got to have something to keep the kiddies quiet on those long, dull stretches of I-95.

Suburban - rides like a nice car, comfy seats, lots of storage space, flexible seating arrangements for kids in 2nd & 3rd rows of seats. OK, it fails in the good-gas-mileage category, but otherwise a very comfortable drive. Has air conditioning/heating vents in middle and back row of seats - a/c cools very well. Heated front seats for winter.

You now, I see Suburbans EVERYWHERE, and I just don't get it. It rides like a car? How is that possible? They are enormous. While I'm sure they do well in crash tests (they probably crush the steel walls), I'd really hate to parallel park one!

Uh, yes, the new ones do, only they are like 2 little pieces of vertical plastic and the cup will fall and spill all over you when you turn. My neighbor has one.

For a long trip nothing beats a big ole' American car, something like a Pontiac Bonneville or Buick LeSabre. It'll be roomy, have good acceleration, give you a nice cushy ride, will handle pretty well and will include all the right stuff -- cup holders, power windows and seats and a CD player.

I agree with al. For long trips, we will rent a car, rather than put mileage and wear and tear on our car.
Hubby and I drove to South Carolina in a Buick LeSabre that we rented, and loved it. Very comfy and roomy!

Regrets, Nina - apparently the family car rules supreme today - maybe it's a failure of imagination. Next, somebody will favor a vega over a red Daytona model. But I'm with you!

Nina is just showing off as usual and bragging about her high class Westchester neighborhood. SInce Martha has been indicted she has been pretty mum about having her as a neighbor though...
