What area of San Diego to stay in?
My husband, my eight-year-old son, and I will be vacationing in San Diego for about a week in early October. We plan on going to the zoo, Balboa Park, the Midway, Old Town, etc., but we also want to spend a day in La Jolla and a day at Legoland.
We will ist likely book an apartment or condo via Homeaway or Airbnb. My question is - what part of San Diego should we stay in? We will rent a car, but we'd love to walk instead of drive when possible.
Many have recommended the Gaslamp Quarter, but I worry that it's a bit adulty/nightlifey for our us. Park West looks like a good possibility, if we can find something there. Ideas and suggestions?

I personally wouldn't stay in the Gaslamp Quarter, as it is pretty busy. I am not sure what your price range is, but there are so many hotels and rentals along the beaches, Coronado, La Jolla, etc and that is always great with kids. That way you can get in some beach time before places open and at the end of the day as well. Mission Beach is great, as there is the bay, the beach, and Belmont Park, all within walking distance from many vacation rentals.
There are tons of hotels in Mission Valley which, while not walking friendly, would put you very central to most of the attractions you mentioned. I am sure that there would be rentals in the neighborhoods above Old Town which would also be a great place to stay.
Personally, I would vote beach, as you should still have great beach weather in October. The tourist traffic will be better than it is in summer.

We have the same problem when we go to San Diego--the attractions are spread all over the place. The last time we were in that area we stayed in Carlsbad. It was o.k., but not great.
If La Jolla is in your budget, it is a great place to stay.

Hi bradshawgirl - October is a great time to come. Your child will be free

Park West is a good location. You can walk across the street to Balboa Park and there's a big playground across from PW. Walk to the rest of Balboa Park and the Zoo.
There's a little market and deli right there. A Pizza place and a couple of other restaurants.
Another area I would look is Little Italy. From LI you can walk down to the Bay and the great Waterfront Park.

The Maritime Museum, USS Midway, Seaport Village, the Children's Museum.

Park West would be my choice. It's a nice area. You'll be close to the zoo and not far from the beaches. It's centrally located.
October will be nice and warm for you. (could be really hot too) We never truly know.
