What area of NOLA is recommended?

My friend who is a native NOLA states that I should stay in the Garden District or Downtown. My primary concern is safety. I'd like proximity to things. He's a big, adventurous dude and he does not recommend walking around too much, with the exception of Downtown and French Quarter.

I am going with my girlfriend for new years eve plus a day or two. We'd like to experience some partying, some cool hip places to eat, and if there are any sites to see.

Anyways I am always up for new opinions so would appreciate yours. Thanks so muc

Can't imagine why you wouldn't stay in the French Quarter? What exactly is downtown and why would you stay there over the French Quarter? Sorry just a little confused.

My friend just thought it would be a little excessive with all the partying. I'm open to anything really. I will be driving from Texas so a spot for my car would be nice.

Do you know any cute B&B's in the french quarter?

There are a number of lovely B & B's in the Faubourg Marigny, the neighborhood that is adjacent to the French Quarter. You might try La Maison Marigny. If you Google them, their website will come up. There are also a number of restaurants and clubs/music venues in the Marigny. If it were me and I wanted to avoid staying in the "party" atmosphere of the French Quarter, but still be close enough to walk around in it, this neighborhood is where I would stay.

This would have been perfect but it's booked. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...Louisiana.html

I think you have to decide what you're going to do for NYE and pick a location based on that unless you plan on renting a car.

The Marriott at gateway to French Quarter is a pretty good place to stay... not a B&B but good parking and reasonably safe near main street for walking..of course you must realize for every person who wants to party there is another person who wants to take advantage.

Last visit a guy come out of no where and started shining my shooes and demanding money. I said you are shining my tennis shoes & I did not ASK you too..no contract. Of coure he wanted me to take out my wallett and steal it. He got nasty 'cause I am female & jsut about that time a policeman came around the corner...I was with 5 others including a BIG guy..just have to be on your best behavor..no quarentee others are..

If you want to come for New Year's, book your room now. Sugar Bowl is January 2, 2009 and all the rooms will be gone as soon as the teams are announced.

Check the website www.bedandbreakfast.com
for suggestions on where to stay if you are looking for a cute place. Contact the properties directly for better rates.

The Marigny is walking distance from the Quarter and the Garden District is a short streetcar ride.

It is absolute insanity NYE in the French Quarter. There are massive crowds and overpriced parking at the hotels. I imagine that is why your friend suggested another area.

Many people really love being in the action with very loud college football fans (that can be loads of fun).

There really isn't a "downtown" in New Orleans.

They call it CBD (central business district) and I don't really know why a tourist would want to stay there. It's on the other side of Canal St. from the FQ, so it's not really that far, but it's geared towards business travelers, obviously. But many of the large chain hotels are in the CBD.

Are you a first timer? Stay in the FQ. Or if you want something quieter and more mellow, the Garden District.

You need to stay in the FQ but you may have to take what you can get at this late date. How long since your friend has been to the city ?
